While I suspect an overwhelming majority perceive aging to play a substantial role in Drew Magary’s novel, I deduce that the concept of aging in the post-mortal is presented to describe larger parts of change in society such as culture. Aging in the Post-Mortal is merely, a subject in the Post-Mortal that gives way to a much bigger sociological entity. In this regards, aging is indeed an important aspect in the Post-Mortal, however aging forces society to change its identity in order to combat problems arise from the cure which is the idea of culture.
Furthermore, I chose the concept of culture as I found it fascinating how one small change in society, …show more content…
such as the cure can forever change how society interacts and functions. I find it intriguing that the Post-Mortal can change something most humans would view as a Utopia and transform this society into a Dystopia. Drew Magary incorporates changes in society I would have never thought about because of the cure. Examples include, Cycle marriages, the greenies, the harassment of pregnant women and many more shocking changes presented in the post mortal society. To clarify, Culture presented in the Post-Mortal is shockingly intriguing given how remarkably similar the Post-Mortal society is at the beginning of the book and how different society is towards the end of the Post Mortal.
However, although I do indeed possess strong opinions in regards to the concept of culture presented in the post mortal, such a strong opinion of culture may be detrimental to research conducted on the concept of culture. By arguing extensively solely on the idea of culture, I may fail to achieve connections between ideas relating to culture. An example of an idea interacting with culture would be primarily the concept of aging. If I focused solely on culture, I may fail to miss that aging is in fact a concept influencing society therefore, shaping the way society functions and forces society to adopt a new culture therefore aging plays a pivotal role in how culture is portrayed in the Post-Mortal. Whilst conducting researching of the culture presented in the post mortal society, I will have to ensure my opinion of culture does not preside in my research as failure to achieve suppression of such a strong opinion will result in bias that will arise in my research, resulting in a limited viewpoint of Drew Magary’s Post-Mortal.
Whilst I do consider myself to already possess a substantial understanding of culture incorporating in Drew Magary’s society, there are a few important aspects of culture in which I will have to conduct research on in order to clarify this intriguing concept.
Such examples of much needed clarification would be to what extent culture impacts parts of society and to what extent culture fails to demonstrate an impact. For example, culture influences how society perceives females in pregnancy in our society, however culture fails to demonstrate change in people in our society achieving pregnancy. Although this is only a minimal example that will need clarification, there are many more aspects of society in which culture veers off and other sociological aspects
begin.
Unfortunately, I do suspect my research of just the primary topic of culture will indeed be too broad initially. In order to combat this, I will be forced to narrow my topic down in order to achieve a greater understanding of how the concept of culture applies in the Post-Mortal society. One way this could be achieved would be to narrow down the facets of society in which culture influences. For example, I could pinpoint on a topic in regards to culture such as how culture affects a family, or how culture affects. However if even this is too broad I will have to deduce the most significant deduction in regards to culture facets in order to gain a applicable understanding of culture presented in the Post-Mortal.
If my preliminary research yields few result, I either need to use a different research source or I will need to retake this class, as I do not possess a substantial understanding of culture in sociological terms to carry out research on this topic. If the latter appears as an inevitable, I will be forced to examine our class notes on culture and broaden my search results based on my new profound understanding of culture. My current understanding of this topic views culture to be a very broad topic so narrowing down my idea will most likely be the case as opposed to broaden the term.
