After people in the United States reach the age of eighteen, they are no longer considered to be juvenile; but are now legally considered to be adults. At this age, one is able to lay down their life for their country, they are allowed to get married, allowed to vote and legally able to buy cigarettes and/or tobacco. At this age, if an individual is able to have all of these rights, why
can’t the consumption of alcohol also be legal?
As a teenager, I still believe teenagers can be super irresponsible with something as serious as drinking, but I also have a strong opinion as to why lowering the legal drinking age could lighten the obsession that many teenagers currently have with underage drinking. I think that it could prevent teenagers from sneaking out, driving under the influence and hopefully encourage them to drink in a more responsible setting. The purpose of the legal drinking age set at 21 is hopefully to protect minors from the effects of alcohol, however, it has the opposite effect. Currently known as ‘binge drinking,” it is extremely common among the average teen to consume a ridiculous amount of alcohol, due to fear of not having access to it for a while.
