Drive-Reduction Theory: Long Term Memory
Long Term Memory
Long term memory is an unlimited capacity store that can hold information over lengthy periods of time. In the movie, long term memory was represented as an endless maze that held all of Riley’s memories. At the end of the day, when Riley went to sleep, the emotions would send all the memories created during the day down to long-term memory. The emotions could then recall these memories whenever they needed them by requesting them to be sent up to headquarters.

Drive-Reduction Theory
Drive-Reduction Theory refers to an internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce the tension. In the movie, Rylie was unhappy after her move to San Francisco. This creates an internal state of tension represented by the conflict between Joy and Sadness. To reduce this tension, her unhappiness, the emotions decide to present the idea to run away. In this case they believed that running away back to Minnesota would reduce this internal state of tension and help create new happy memories for Riley.

The emotions are happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, disgust, and anger. Out of these six emotions, only five are represented as characters in the movie. Happiness is represented as the character Joy, and then the rest of the characters follow the traditional names of Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. This therefore leaves surprise out of the main emotions. The characters then take on the attributes of the emotions such as Joy is always happy, Sadness is always sad, Fear is always scared, Disgust is always judging situations, and Anger has a short temper. The emotions then work together to influence Rylie’s actions as well as create new memories where they affect the type of emotion associated with each

Outline and evaluate one alternative to the multi-store model of memory (e.g. working memory, levels of processing) Craik and Lockhart (1972) advanced the levels of processing theory (LOP) as an alternative to the multi-store model. They argued that deeper levels of processing would greatly enhance the strength and durability of a memory trace and therefore its memorability. Thus if you process information “deeply” then it will be stored. Deep processing would, according to the researchers, occur due to greater depth of analysis, elaboration, organisation and distinctiveness.…

The most important take away from this movie, one that all the emotions and Riley learn, is that not all memories (especially the core memories) have to be only one emotion, they can be, but in most situations, it’s okay to feel upset and happy in the same memory. For instance, when Joy finds the memory of Riley when she and her teammates lost the hockey game. At first the “memory bubble” is blue with sadness, but then the team comes over and hoists her up in the air, which cheers her up turning the bubble golden again. This process is called reframing, or in this case reframing memories. Joy at the beginning of the movie only saw things in an upbeat manner, so therefore all of the memories she was in control of were happy because that is the mindset Riley was in.…

I believe a good example of perception and emotion was when the Persian store owner went to the Mexican locksmiths house to get revenge because he believed the locksmith is the one who terrorized and robbed his store. He took the gun he had purchased with intentions to kill the locksmith, and when he gets to the house they get into a confrontation. The Mexican’s little girl was looking out the door and when she seen the Persian man pull the gun out she ran out to protect her daddy because she had her “magic necklace” on. As she is running out her daddy grabs her to protect her from the bullet that was fired by the Persian. This particular scene showed a lot of perception and emotion by how upset and hurt the Persian man was about his store, to him going to retaliate against the Mexican. You could feel the pain and remorse of the Mexican man when he thought his daughter was shot, but you also see his relief when she wasn’t. He didn’t even retaliate back, he was just glad his little girl was ok and took his family in the house.…

Emotions are our motivation for everything we do, but it can also lead us into trouble when they go awry. Uncontrolled emotions cause us to act irrationally, which, more time than not, leads the characters in Shakespeare's ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to tragedy. Anger, Love, and Grief are of the most difficult to abstain from acting upon, and lead to the worse consequences.…

Within the theories of emotion describes the concept of primary and secondary emotion. Primary emotion “mobilizes us, focuses our attention, and signal our state of mind to other” (CITATION 120). Primary emotion is typically what people feel first, such as the feelings of anger, fear, sadness, and joy. In the documentary, Melissa Moody’s primary emotions after her accident in her situation was most likely a combination of fear, anger, and sadness. She was most likely feeling anger because her sister-in-law just ran her over; sad, because she knew that her life would change; and fear, because she might not live through the injuries. After the situation, she starts to feel secondary emotions that “evolve as humans developed more sophisticated means of learning, controlling, and managing emotions to promote flexible cohesion in social groups” (CITATION 120). After the incident and after her divorce, her secondary emotion included anger and even contemplated suicide. However, after 6 months, she moved on and overcame these obstacles in living a happier life. Another situation presented by Dan Gilbert that is similar to Melissa’s is his example of a person winning the lottery vs. a person who is paraplegic. At first, people who won the lottery probably experience the primary emotion of extreme joy; people who are paraplegic could most likely have the primary…
