Driving Under The Influence
Drivers First Offense of DUI Deserves Jail Time
American InterContinental University

Abstract
I have been thinking so much about life and things that happen. I think about all the car accidents that have happened. I think about how many people think its ok to drink or take drugs and then drive because they feel they are fine. They take the decision into their own hands to decide to get behind the wheel not honestly knowing if they are for sure okay to drive or not. I feel that if you are the kind of person that thinks this is okay then you deserve to spend time in jail to think about your actions.

Drivers First Offense of DUI Deserves Jail Time I was sitting and talking with a group of friends about different things in life. We ended up on the topic of people driving under the influence. I didn’t realize how many of my friends have actually done this. After this we talked about how they didn’t really receive anything but a small fine. I felt this was absurd and unacceptable. In my opinion people who are convicted of a DUI should be made to serve jail time. First, there are many people who get a DUI and continue to do it again because they just receive a slap on the wrist for it. When people get picked up for a DUI they are normally just given a ticket if they have someone that can come and pick them up. Sometimes they are made to sit in the jail until they sober up and then are let go. I mean it’s like a child when they do something wrong we punish them to ensure that they don’t do it again because it could be harmful to the child or someone else. So if we do this with a child why should an adult be any different? If they received a harder charge like having to spend jail time along with a fine then they would be less likely repeat their actions just like a child. Secondly, sometimes these people kill people when they can’t pay attention because they are under the influence. When these people get into a vehicle under the influence they are taking the

In an article called from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called, “Impaired Driving: Get the Facts” it states, “Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $59 billion” (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 1). The fact that so many people die every day in the United States from alcohol related accidents is absolutely ridiculous. The stories are endless. In Steve Schmadeke’s article, “Man gets 15 years in DUI accident that killed mother, son” He talks about the terrible tragedy that ended two innocent lives. Schmadeke states, “A speeding, unlicensed driver who crashed into another car on the Northwest Side, killing a mother and her teenage son and injuring three other children, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison” (Schmadeke 1). Because 37 year old, Richard Strum decided to drive while intoxicated, he took two innocent lives and injured three others. He not only took a mother, but he also took a daughter, sister, and wife. He not only took a son, but he also took a brother, cousin, best friend, student, and ultimately someone who didn’t even have a chance at real life before it was taken away. Drunken driving accidents are far too…

DUI cases are handled like pedophilia and rape cases: the defendant gets off the hook through some obscure loophole or malarkey reason and spends maybe a few years in prison or even just probation only to commit the crime again. When a person is arrested for a DUI they are held for a period of time to sober up and released on bail with a court date. A DUI without injury is a slap on the wrist of fines, loss of their driver’s…

Drunk driving is a serious problem in America. I purpose it would help people of America to prevent drunk drivers by having more severe punishments. Being more severe will help people realize that this is a very bad thing to do and is dangerous to people surrounding the drunk driver. We need to make the punishment make people understand this is a very big issue. I suggest that the first time you are caught intoxicated you spend 30 days in jail. Then spend 60 days in AA meetings then have a weekly drug test for the next year so that they…

At some point in our lives we have heard a news report that involved a drunk driver and an innocent victim. Usually these incidents are accidents where a person driving under the influence runs a red light or jumps a curb, hitting, and more often than not, killing an innocent person. These injuries and deaths are all easily preventable. In the United States, over 20% of all motor vehicle related deaths are caused by an impaired driver. Which is why this crime continues to be a national problem that takes the lives of thousands of people every year (Hanson). Way too often the victims of these tragedies are young teens or children. Why people drive drunk is a question that people have been trying to answer for a long time. There have been suggestions to implement tougher DUI laws, which seems like a great idea. Unfortunately, people seem to only look at the downside rather than what tougher laws would do for the safety of the public.…

Those injured and killed in drunk driving collisions are not accident victims. The crashes caused by impaired drivers involve two choices: to drink AND to drive. The injuries and deaths sustained each year by drunk driving can be prevented. Those who choose to drive while impaired, have been informed of the dangers, however, decide to ignore the harsh facts. They will eventually end up facing injury or death to themselves or, even worse, someone else. This is a reality some choose to ignore until they are forced to live or die along with the consequences.…

    Drunk Driving Is a Crime

Drunk drivers who cause accidents with fatalities should be charged with murder.Nowadays, driving while intoxicated has become the deadliest crime. There were more than 11,000 alcohol-impaired deaths in 2009, sadly those deaths were preventable if the government had more severe laws against this issue. Drivers are well aware of the laws and consequences against drunk driving, especially after destroying families due to their carelessness decision. Victims’ families entire life is ruined because of the sudden death of their loved one, and they are never going to be able to reclaim their normal life, while the offender after a few days in prison reclaims his normal life. As a result of the fragile criminal justice system everyday road users share the road with repeat offenders who are highly resistant to change their behavior despite previous sanctions, treatment or education. Thus, those who cause the death of another person while driving drunk should be charged with murder and receive a mandatory prison sentence of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole. When an accident happens, fatalities that occur suddenly can be more difficult to deal with than anticipated death because members of the family are not well prepared. Sudden losses are even more difficult to process when a person is killed violently knowing that it could have been prevented if it wasn’t for another person’s negligence. These actions often cause strong emotions, and anger. Sometimes family members will consider doing things that are out of personality such as leading to suicide. In addition, family members are financially affected after losing their loved ones. For instance, the cost of medical bills, phone bills and the funeral can be devastating to families with a small budget causing more suffering and pain. For the survivors of crashes caused by drunk drivers, who have life sentence injuries their pain and suffering is just starting, while the offender is having his life back without…
