In the summer of 2012, a horrible crash happened near San Fransisco, California. A young 20 year old, Alex Williams, as well as the driver of the pick up going the wrong way was killed. The drivier of the pick up had a blood alcohol level 3 times the legal limit. Not only did a family loose a daughter, sister and friend, but another family lost a father and husband. Just because somebody made the choice to drive drunk, both families will be imprisioned by the loss for the rest of their lives. ople need to realize drunk driving is a serious offence. A life is taken about every 45 minutes due to drunk driving. We have to face the unfortunate truth that the penelties for a first time offence isnt going to do much. A license can be suspended up to a year and most the time is only penelized for 6 months, if that. If you drive drunk and kill someone, you might be charged with a man slaughter. What is the point of charging them if the punishment is so sympathetic. The government needs to make a harsher punishment. Possibly 6 months to a year for a first time offence. Maybe that will make them think twice about getting behind the wheel of a vihicle after drinking. People who drink are meantally uncapable of makeing self concious decisions. With the peer pressure for their friends and enviroment, people are more likely to drink more. If you drove whle drunk and killed yourself, what would happen to your family? They could possible loose a source of income and possible their only. If their first penalty was more severe, then there is a better chanve they wont do it again. Khloe Kardashian was pulled over in MArch of 2004 for suspected drunk driving. After finding out she was, she wasw imprisioned for 3 hours. She pleaded no contrest and was sentenced to 36 month probation. Although she wasnt in jail long, that has been her only DUI. If the government took drunk driving more serioulst, then there might no be as many deaths as there are now. Unfotunotly, the truth of the matter is that no matter how many chances somebody gets, that person may never learn. Many people every year choose to get behind the wheel after drinking. The worst part is the family who has to suffer. Dealing with medical bills and other expensces causes the family a lot of un needed stress. If people completely understand the long term effects drunk driving can cause on a family, more people would restrain from doing it. For exapmle, Lindsay Lohan has had 3 DUI's. She has only gone to jail one time and that was for violating her probation after reciving one of her DUI's. Her DUI's has caused a lot of drama between her family. Parents divorcing and siblings fighting is only a few of the many problems. Many movie companies do not want to work with her becuase she isnt reliable. They dont know the next thing she will do. Not being asked to work will prevent her from being able to provide for a family if she ever chooses to have one. f course it might be argued that a harsher punishment wouldnt work at all. People might say that it wouldnt have an effect on people who are alcoholics. Or that they dont know what their doing. But it is the exact opposite. Drunk drivers know what the laws and concequences are if they are convicted of a DUI. They dont care. They know that it wont be a harsh punishment. They might get their license suspended.There is nothing stopping them from driving drunk. They have the opprotunity to hurt someone and cause a family or families un needed stress and greif. Many people underestimate how serious drunk driving is until they experience it first hand. Then it's too late to do anything. In the long run, harsher punishments would greatly benefit the enconomy. Cutting down on taxes as well as families being able to provide more for their family. Harsher punishments would make the offender realize that what their doing is morally wrong. Incresing the punishment would make them realize that driving drunk is something that can and should be prevented.
