In what is regarded as one of the most disturbing news in recent times, about 1000 young men had attacked about 80 women in the Cologne Central Railway Station mugging and assaulting them sexually on the New Year’s Eve.
The magnitude of the incident was such that it has sent shock waves across Germany and promoted to city Mayor to summon the police for holding crisis talks and taking evasive actions.
The chief of Cologne Police, Wolfgang Albers, while talking to the media termed the incident as an entirely new and unexpected ‘dimension of crime’. He also claimed that the perpetrators were of either Arabian or North African origin. All of them were drunk, he added. Majority of the incidents reported involved robbery, and a volunteer police woman was amongst the ones who were sexually assaulted. Cologne, and especially the area around the Cologne has always been notorious and infamous for theft and pick pocketing during the time of Christmas and New Year, with thousands amassing in the area to join the festivities. However, this time the crimes were not limited to thefts and pick pockets, and turned into something that was far more serious, and this has virtually shocked the entire Germany.
