Diseased corneal nerves is an invisible and oftentimes overlooked. Some experts who are studying this disease agree that a reduction in tear production may be caused by the disease but is not the cause. This hypersensitivity may be triggered by tear evaporation but is not caused by dry eyes. Damage to the corneal nerves may have a number of causes, including LASIK procedures. The result of diseased or damaged corneal nerves is blurred vision and eye pain.
Brain connections. Centralized corneal pain actually originates in the pain pathways of the brain, even though you may feel as if the pain is in and around your eye(s). Think of these pathways as electrical circuits. If there is an electrical short circuit, the pain receptors in the brain is triggered and you experience this form of centralized pain.
Combination of both. Your eye pain may be caused by both diseased corneal nerves as well as brain connections. Your pain may have started with a disease or damage of your corneal nerves, leading to the brain connections and your centralized
