The difference between the two most importantly is the viewpoints of both. In “Dulce Et Decorum Est” it is written by a author Wilfred Owen who actually fought in the war. “The Charge of the Light Brigade” is written by an author Alfred, Lord Tennyson who was a general a man of authority who didn’t actually fight or have his life on the line during the war. The soldier who actually fought in the war Wilfred Owen is against war, while the general who hasn’t actually fought is for the war. Alfred, Lord Tennyson is encouraging and praising these men for fighting while yet they are dying in numerous amounts. In his poem he describes what these men are encountering while marching through a war intensely. For example in the poem he says “Cannon to the right of them, Cannon to the left them, Cannon in front of them Volley’d and thunder’d; Storm’d at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode …show more content…
and well”. Lord Tennyson goal is to explain to the reader that these men are dying for the good of their country and that they should be looked upon with honor.
Wilfred Owen is against the war and explains in detail of the way that soldiers died in his poem using similes and metaphors to emphasize the misery he went through.
An example of a simile used by Owen is “His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin”. Dulce Et Decorum Est means “It is sweet and honorable to die for the fatherland(country), yet in Owen’s poem overall he is saying that just like the title says it is good to die for your country, but fighting at war is terrible and that while fighting it’s every soldier for himself and not his country. Owen’s experienced the war with his own eyes and dealt with having to protect himself and those fighting with him and he does not support the
war.
Overall you have two poems, from two different people, both having different aspects of the war. Tennyson glamorizes the war and has a very positive view point and sees the war as a chance for a man to prove himself. In his poem he describes how these men are charging into a certain death and speaks on the bravery of these men for doing so. Owen’s poem describes the war and it’s gory intensely and effectively in showing readers how bad the war was and how gruesome the war could be. In Owen’s Dulce Et Decorum Est he writes directly about what he sees and provides no signs of heroics just the reality of human suffering and truth about war.
