Who's For The Game By Jessie Pope Analysis

War is harmful to the people, and somewhat good to have for the people. War is harmful because it draws death, what this means is; many men and women will die for their country. There is pain and suffering for both the people fighting and the families. The world is full of harming aspects of war, on the other hand, war can be good. The reason war can be good is for freedom. People are risking their lives to save the country that they love. Good comes and shows itself it all kinds of ways and war can turn out to be one of them. “Dulce et Decorum Est,” written by Wilfred Owen, and,” Who’s for the Game?” written by Jessie Pope both show ways it can be harmful but good. (THESIS). In the first poem, “Dulce et Decorum Est,” Owen has a very strong introduction against war. Owen has very vivid images written in very descriptive words that show just how bad the war is at this time. Soldiers are, “Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots/ of gas-shells dropping
The author sees excitement and joy in being able to serve for his country. Pope thinks that there needs to be people to take account for themselves and step up to the plate. The poem is very bland to read because the author does not use as many sensory details as Owen to provide the reader with imagery. Pope’s idea of war would be that it is a job position that needs to be filled. When someone has gone through the war they understand more about it and Pope does not show how life was affected or anyone else would be conflicted by war. “Who knows it won’t be a picnic – not much -/ Yet eagerly shoulders a gun?/ Who would much rather come back with a crutch/ Than lie low and be out of the fun?” (9-12). In this quote, when Pope asks the question, “Who would rather come back with a crutch” (11), he does not tell about the men who may being going home with no life left in them at all.
