It was easy to see that she was nervous and her speech lacked some supporting details. Granted, there were a couple facts placed in the body of the speech which fit very well, but it just lacked facts in general. Adding more facts to the speech would have built more credibility and given Dulce more to talk about within her speech. Again, had she done just a little more preparation and research, it easily could’ve been a great speech. Even though the facts were a little sparse and she was nervous, Dulce sold the speech well. I gave her a four on both the eye contact and extemporaneous presentation because those were her strongest suits. She did not rely on the outline like a crutch which allowed her to make eye contact with the audience. Eye contact is an important nonverbal delivery skill because it gives a feeling that the speaker is likely telling the truth and it is also harder for the audience to mentally drift away (Fraleigh & Tuman, 2009). As an audience member, I felt that Dulce’s eye contact did make it seem like she was telling the truth, and it kept my attention concentrated on her.
