Choices are like flowers. There are so many, but only a few are good enough to be picked. In the Chosen Danny and Reuven experience this within their friendship. They make the hard choice not to talk to each other for fear of consequences. They would have chosen the other ‘flower,’ which would have been to ignore Reb Saunders's wishes. Dwayne and Mai, the latter being ten, were Vietnamese refugee children. Mai, the older sister, fought hard to keep them together, and succeeded when a kindly African American couple, Harold and Dolores Williams, adopted them both and reared them into adulthood. Twenty-two years later, Mai is already married to an Asian man named Vinh, while Dwayne is preparing to propose to his girlfriend Nina, an independent, attractive African American young woman. Their choices of romantic partner are an example of their responses to the new culture. Mai clings steadfastly to her original Vietnamese heritage. Dwayne, on the other hand, takes to his second culture fully, occasionally slipping into Ebonics in his speech, and working as a manager at a mainly black-employed…
Like Chinua Achebe, John Kennedy Toole explores the dilemma of nonconformity through the outrageous character of Ignatius J. Reilly in A Confederacy of Dunces. Ignatius J. Reilly is different from the men in the Reserve Police Battalion 101 and Okonkwo in that he is an innate outcast. Because of his traumatic childhood and upbringing, Ignatius J. Reilly is a well educated thirty-year-old man with the mentality of a child. Ignatius struggles to conform to adulthood and puts forth his best effort to reject the modern societal symbols of adulthood. He chooses a “Dr. Nut” soda over an alcoholic beverage, prefers food over drugs, and disdains anything related to sex. Ignatius prides himself on being a virgin to not only sex, but also to any adult…

Even though he only had one tattoo I yearned him to fill the lonely hours between Dr Phil and days of our lives. as he approached me with his pasty white arms hanging out of a Nike vest, his smile told me it was dole day, and I knew my velour track suit would be hanging off the lampshade tonight. As I stood in line at centrelink, thinking up reasons why I can't work, a sweet smell drifted past my pig like nostrils. It was a mixture of weed, sweat and lynx Africa! I turned and there he was Dwayne, with his pants halfway down his arse, our eyes met and he was soon lifting me onto the wheelie bins behind the Rec Centre. He had already tied his staffy to a post in an alleyway so we would not be disturbed. There was a tramp watching but it did not bother us, just added to the mystery. I knew then that this was love and my life would never be the same again. I made a promise to him there and then that I would buy him a plasma with the baby bonus.....…

The story “Two Gallants” by James Joyce, at first glance, can be read as a story about two impoverished men who need to ask a lover for money in order to survive. However, with a closer look, you can see that the two men, Corley and Lenehan, get close to a woman in order to possibly swindle money from her. Although one definition of Gallant means to court someone, which Corley does, the other definitions which include being “brave, spirited, noble-minded, or chivalrous,” “exceptionally polite and attentive to women,” and “showy, colorful, or stylish, as in dress; magnificent;” none of which fit either character. The word “gallant” in the story’s title, and in the story itself, is used semi-ironically by Joyce in order to show the true miscreant nature of Corley and Lenehan, who are stand-ins for Dublin as a whole.…

This summer has gone a lot faster than usual, normally I’d kind of want to go back to school to see my friends but now it doesn’t really feel like we’ve had summer at all. That it’s only lasted 2 weeks rather than 3 months. I’m unsure whether this is because we’ve been limited when it comes to how much sun we’ve gotten and flooded (literally) with the amount of rain we’ve received, I’ve had more than the necessary lazy days spent on my sofa in my pyjamas laughing at tv shows that I’ve seen countless times.…
