Dystopian Movie: Divergent, Directed By Neil Burger
Divergent, directed by Neil Burger and authored by Veronica Roth, is a young adult dystopian movie. Throughout the movie, Beatrice Prior(Shailene Woodley), nicknamed Tris, is not only trying to determine who she is as an adult, but also trying to fit into the world of adulthood with the help of her romantic interest, Tobias Eaton(Theo James), mostly known as Four in the movie. Surprisingly, Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet, one of the lead characters, was five months pregnant when she filmed the movie. It was released in March 21, 2014, and earned $54,607,747 on the opening weekend. Divergent is a tender and inspiring movie with relatable lead female characters, a beautiful soundtrack that makes the audience feel as if they are part of the …show more content…
Chicago is surrounded by the wall from all sides to keep the people inside the wall safe. The Amity are known as the peaceful ones, the Candor are truthful, the Erudite are intelligent, the Abnegation are selfless, and the Dauntless are brave. At the Choosing Ceremony, the sixteen-year-old adolescents get to choose which factions they want to be a part of. They can choose to remain in the same factions as their family or change their factions and leave everything that they have known behind. Hence, the movie revolves around Tris as she tries to determine who she is as she goes through trials of friendship and …show more content…
Shailene Woodley is believable as a teenage girl who is determined to fit into the world of Dauntless. She does a really good job at showing the wide range of emotions of a teenage girl from happiness to sadness to determination. The audience is left cheering for Woodley until the end as she becomes determined to fit into the Dauntless. Kate Winslet is able to instantly develop herself as the sly, scheming, and intelligent leader of the Erudite in the eyes of the audience starting with her first appearance in the movie, where she has a conversation with Tris’s family at the Choosing Ceremony. Although Divergent is an amazing movie to watch with realistic acting, it still has its flaws. Manohla Dargis in her review “Reviews: In ‘Divergent,’ Jolted Awake by Fear and Romance” published at The New York Times writes, “Girl warrior meets boy warrior and, in between punches, kicks, and bullets, they hold hands.” The plot where a girl warrior falls in love with a male warrior is a cliché as almost every action movie has them, but Divergent still managed to work the plot in a way that was essential for the meaning of the

In Veronica Roth’s Divergent, Tris has to make the most important decision of her life by choosing a new faction. Tris was born into a selfless faction, but she has a difficult time playing by their rules. On the other hand, she fits right into her new faction, and she enjoys the freedom that her old faction was not able to provide. Therefore, even though Tris hesitates about being in Dauntless, her lack of Abnegation qualities proves otherwise. This can be seen by looking at her lack of selflessness and her abundance of bravery.…

The actress who played Claire portrayed the character well. From the beginning to the end she really captured the characters and her emotions. When she first entered on stage I was confused of what was going as she was walking aimlessly across the stage but later realized that was the whole point. She wanted the audience to believe she was confused and lost; and she did. I notice her break the fourth wall every now and then as she looked into the audience. I suppose it was part of the scrip to interact with the audience because she mostly did it when she was on the side doing random things with the people in tight pants. Her entrances where perfect every time, even though the scenes where being switched off between her and Richard in the car, she never seen to loose focus. You could clearly see every expression on her face which made it more realistic to the audience.…

He delivers Shakespeare’s language with as much power as Sorkin’s lines earlier this year in Steve Jobs. His anger is visceral, his pain is heart-wrenching, his drive is palpable. Marion Cotillard is at her English-language best as Lady Macbeth. She is villainous, sexual, and sympathetic. The rest of the supporting cast does a commendable job with the admittedly dense source material. Duncan and Macduff are standouts, but there is not a single bad performance in the film.…

The war was terrible, the whole world was destroyed. The last city left divided themselves into five factions to keep the peace. The smart ones are classified Erudite. Amity farm the land, and they are always kind. Candor value honesty, Dauntless are brave, and Abnegation are selfless. The system works because everyone knows where they belong; everyone except for Tris. In the novel Divergent, by Veronica Roth, Tris demonstrates perseverance; this is shown through how she is able to step out of her comfort zone, always remains undeterred, and can overcome obstacles.…

This movie relates a lot to the five themes of geography we have been studying. It relates to location because they live in the suburbs in Chicago, which is a place. A location is people and places are positioned variously on the Earth’s surface. Also, the father lived in Greece before coming over to the U.S. So therefore, location relates to this movie. It also relates to place, physical and human characteristics distinguish one place from other places. In Greece, you have a very religion type of country. Houses are made to represent the Parthenon, which to the Greeks, is the home of Athena. Rather in, Chicago, you have very modern houses that don’t symbolize really anything. It relates to relationships within places also because in the movie, the family’s house in Chicago resembles the Parthenon, which you wouldn’t exactly see in such a city. It can also relate to movement because the family is constantly on the phone with each other. With Greeks, you would normally have a huge family, so they are constantly talking on cell phones or driving to each other’s houses to gossip. Also, last…

I was pleasantly surprised that the movie stayed true to the original play, and the story was easy to follow. I applaud the cast for representing their characters how I imagined they would. Winona Ryder was very believable as she portrayed Abigail. I hated her in the book, and I immediately felt the same way once she appeared. I envisioned John Proctor to look a bit differently; maybe not so disheveled. Daniel Day-Lewis successfully showed the harsh, straight-forward side of Proctor as well as the insanity that came out of his anger before his death. I also thought Joan Allen did well as she portrayed an innocent but outspoken Elizabeth. The actors of Danforth, Parris, Hale, Mary Warren, Tituba, Betty, Rebecca Nurse, and Hathorne all gave a sound performance although during some scenes stronger emotions could have been brought out. Nicholas Hytner, the director, did well to keep the events in a way that could be understood even if the book wasn’t read prior to watching the movie. The setting and attire was also convincing. Personally I thought it did the book justice but more passion from the actors could have made it even better.…
