In his work, Heraclitus claimed that the universe is in a constant state of flux, initiated by a law-like order which he called logos. Logos is best defined as, “the divine reason or plan which coordinates a changing universe.” (2) Heraclitus believed this “dynamic equilibrium” existed by a constant interchange of elements. “...for Heraclitus, fire changes into water and then into earth; earth changes into water and then into fire.” (1) To represent logos, Hericlitus compared the series of transformations in nature to the element of fire, inconstant and rapidly changing.
