Early Years On May seventh of 1840 a famous composer was born, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He was born in a small town into a family with a long line of military service. He started taking piano lessons at age five, and soon became very good at reading sheet music. His parents were very impressed and gave him his own music study, but soon decided instead to send him to a school that they had both graduated from. The school's name was the Imperial School of Jurisprudence. Being a musician back then was very low on the social ladder, and with Pyotr’s fathers paycheck becoming more and more unsturdy his parents wanted him to be able to support himself as soon as possible. After three years he enrolled in the Russian Musical Society and he became a musical professional. Another composer named Rubinstein became impressed with Tchaikovsky’s work, but was less impressed by some of his student work. Either way Tchaikovsky grew more popular, but with his First Symphony Rubinstein wouldn’t allow it to be played unless Tchaikovsky made some revisions. Music Career Tchaikovsky’s music career really started when he decided to start working for the opera. He would compose and perform pieces, and the opera became increasingly impressed with him. His popularity also increased when the musical appreciates of Russia started to like a more complicated style of music. He then started to write operas and symphonies, making him more and more popular. At the height of his career he was in the Belyayev circle, and is responsible for works such as: The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty.
