Earthquake in Pakistan
Earthquake activity in Pakistan is mainly concentrated in the north and western sections of the country, along the boundary of the Indian plate and the Iranian and Afghan micro-plates. The Chaman Fault runs along Pakistan's western frontier with Afghanistan from Kalat, in the northern Makran range, past Quetta and then on to Kabul, Afghanistan. A fault also runs along the Makran coast and is believed to be of the same nature as the West Coast fault along the coast of Maharashtra, India. An active subduction zone exists off the Makran coast. The great 1945 earthquake was centred in this region.

This zone forms the boundary between the Arabian and the Iranian micro-plate, where the former subducts or dives beneath the latter. Thrust zones run along the Kirthar, Sulaiman and Salt ranges. There are four faults in and around Karachi and other parts of deltaic Indus, and Makran coast. The first is the Allah Bund fault that passes through Shahbundar, Jah, Pakistan Steel Mills, and runs through eastern parts of the city and ends near Cape Monz. This fault, in fact, has caused extensive damage in the past many centuries in the deltaic areas. The destruction of Bhanbhor in the 13th century and damage to Shahbundar in 1896 were caused by this fault. The other one emanates from the Rann of Kutchh. The third one is the Pubb fault which ends into Arabian sea near Makran coast and the last one is located in the lower Dadu district near Surajani and falls in the vicinity of Karachi. Tsunamis or tidal waves have also affected the coast of Pakistan. The worst case was in 1945 when an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck the Makran coast, waves as high as 12 meters were

Earthquakes are an example of seismic activity caused by the build-up of tension at the three types of plate boundaries: destructive, constructive and conservative. The pressure is suddenly released as the plates jerk past each other, sending out seismic waves from the focus that travel through different parts of the earth. The movement of convection currents within the Earth’s mantle causing the crust to become mobile which creates the different types plate margins, makes the cause due to physical factors. However human activity is suggested to be the cause of some minor earthquakes, for instance the building of large reservoirs where the water stresses the surface rocks or the subsidence of deep mine workings.…

In general, the map that contained all the earthquake distributions mostly had shallow quakes spread around. Deep quakes on the map were a lot less common. I would estimate that about 85%-90% of the earthquakes were shallow quakes. There were only three earthquakes on the map that had a magnitude of 7.0 or greater. The earthquakes that appeared to have occurred along spreading zones made up about 80% of the earthquakes on the map. Earthquakes that have occurred in these areas generally have ocean ridges. The other areas where earthquakes happen are on subduction zones where there usually are ocean trenches and oceanic mountain ranges. About 13% of the earthquakes on the map occurred along subduction zones. Out of all of the earthquakes on the map, I would say that about twenty of the quakes do not appear to be associated with any active plate boundary. The most powerful earthquakes that were plotted on the map occurred along subduction zones. The deepest earthquakes on the map also occurred along subduction zones. The geological factors that might explain the different levels of earthquake activity seen in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean basins is that in the Atlantic Ocean basin, there is a divergent spreading zone. On the other hand, the Pacific Ocean basin is on a subduction zone. Overall in the three-week period, the population centers that experienced the largest numbers of earthquakes were East India and Indonesia. The earthquakes that occurred in India and Indonesia were very well reported in the news because it caused deaths of more than 100,000 people and billions of dollars worth of…

Many people face dire situations everyday, but what about deadly? This is what about 43,000 Filipinos faced on October 15, 2013 when a deadly 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the islands of Bohol and Cebu. The temblor was the largest to shake the area in 23 years. (BK Info) Also, 2211 aftershocks hit the region and most citizens were completely unprepared, and shocked. The cause of this disaster is likely the East Bohol Fault. The quake killed around 185 people and put at least 36,000 buildings (mainly homes) into a state of destruction. Various locations were now just heaps of wreckage, including ports, schools, airports, hospitals, and lots of houses. People respond to a natural catastrophe by gathering supplies, getting help, and trying to survive and get back upon their feet.…

There are also secondary effects that can be a disastrous to Los Angeles like faulting and ground ruptures, aftershocks, and fires. Earthquakes originate from the sudden movement of faults. As the faults move, in any direction, the blocks of rock on both sides of the fault will rub against each other and that cause the vibrations. The more the faults move, the larger the amount and intensity of vibrations in the earthquake will be. The reason that Los Angeles is prone to an earthquake at any given time is because the center of the city is located directly above a group of thrust faults. These faults occur at convergent boundaries. It is also located closely the fault known as the San Andreas Fault, which has produced some of the largest earthquakes the world has ever seen. Thrust faults can give way to immense pressure, which will cause one slab of rock to push against another slab of rock and ultimately it will push the other plate upward. Earthquakes have devastated Los Angeles in the past. The largest quake in modern history was the Fort Tejon Earthquake in 1857. It measured 8.0 on the Richter scale. Southern California was scarcely populated, so…

California lies on a conservative plate boundary where the Pacific plate and the North American plate are the components. There are separated by a transform fault, known as the San Andreas Fault. The Pacific plate is moving north comparative to the North American plate however the fault is not smooth and so friction between the plates occur causing plates to lock. The continued pressure created by the movement of the plates around these locked portions of the fault causes the crust in these areas to denature, building up in elastic potential energy. When the stress builds it ruptures causing a sudden movement and allows the locked portions of the plates to jolt back into their correct positions. This movement causes the very sudden release of the stored energy as seismic waves which cause earthquakes.…

In the 1960’s the earthquake that was the most destructive was a magnitude 4.8 on August 9, 1967. Centered near Commerce city caused more than a million dollars in damage to Denver and northern homes. A earthquake measured at magnitude 4.5 followed three months later in November 1967. Published articles speculate that a magnitude 6.0 is possible on the fault that runs under the Rocky Mountain Arsenal causing more than 10 billion dollars in damage. Due to the deep injection of liquid waste into a borehole, numerous earthquakes occurred some of which caused damage but devastating earthquakes that we are not prepared for may…

The San Andreas Fault is a place where two massive tectonic plates, specifically the North American and Pacific plates. The small split in the ground extends more than 800 miles and is roughly ten miles deep. The SAF is located in Northern California, and extends to Cajon Pass in the San Bernardino Mountains. The SAF was formed around fifteen to twenty million years ago. the fault, classified as a Right Lateral Strike-Slip fault, was formed when the North American and Pacific plates came into contact with each other. When this happened, what is now known as the San Andreas Fault came into existence. Thousands of small earthquakes occur along this fault every year, however it is not uncommon for there to be massive earthquakes accompanied by this fault. For example, the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 which devastated most of the buildings and roads in Southern California, was a victim of…

For the past week, Mexico has already experienced 23 earthquakes and for the past year it has gone through 1,497. All these earthquakes had a magnitude of 1.5 or greater with the biggest one reaching 6.9 in Tajumulco, San Marcos, Guatemala. These statistics show how common earthquakes are in this area. This is because the country is positioned on top of 3 large tectonic plates. The movement in the plates cause the natural disasters that they face such as the earthquakes and volcanic activity.…

Destructive boundaries are between two plates that are colliding. One type is where the oceanic plate collides with a less dense continental plate. As the oceanic plate is subducted into the upper layers of the mantle, various features form. Subduction causes friction to be created by the descending slab of ocean floor, generating a lot of heat leading to a partial melting of a plate. The basaltic magma from this old ocean floor is less dense than the magma of the mantle and rises through fissures and by stoping its way through an overlying rock until it reaches the surface, where it erupts as a volcano. Deep ocean trenches are found along the seaward edge of destructive plate boundaries. They mark where one plate begins to descend under another and reach great depths. On the descending plate there is the Benioff Zone which is the location for earthquakes. Rocks scraped off the descending plate and folding of continental crust help to create young fold mountain chains on the leading edge of the continent for example the Andes on the West Coast of South America.…

What the picture doesn’t show is that there are actually several cracks in the pavement in the area around the fault. When following the cracked pavement and fault line, the fault leads straight into a building. On the outside of this building, there are also cracks in the wall right where the fault intersects the building. Like the previous sites, both pieces of evidence show right lateral creeping of the Pacific plate.…

There are three different types of earthquakes Convergent boundary which is where one plate is forced over another plate during movement creating a thrust fault. A Divergent boundary is when the plates are forced apart from each other, usually forming a Rift Zone. This is common underneath the water on ocean floors. An example is the Mid Atlantic Ridge. The last one is the Transform fault, unlike divergent and convergent, the plates here slip by each other. This is also called…

Los Angeles was built on a myriad of transform faults that include Santa Monica fault, the San Fernando fault, and Northridge/Santa Barbara fault. Even though these faults are not as well-known as the San Andreas Fault, where it margins are between the Pacific and North American plates that cross Southern California. Los Angeles is sitting near at least 60 known faults. The earth still moves frequently in these smaller less known areas. One example of this is the earthquake that was focused in the Northridge area happened in January 1994. It only lasted 30 seconds registering at 6.7 on the Richter scale but the aftershocks lasted for several days afterwards. Ground displacement is the second hazard main of earthquakes. Especially if there is a building or roadway on or near the fault line. This quake alone killed 60 people, and injuring thousands. It also caused fires and an explosion in the Granada Hills area, causing many buildings and freeways to collapse. There were also many homes left without power or water.…
