This brings to mind my experience living in Hawaii. I was very surprised to see how much Asian influence there was on the island of Oahu. Although different culture reside on the island they all seemed to have a more elaborated ways of celebrating what we in America would think are small events. For
example a baby’s first birthday is celebrated much like a coming out party. The ceremony is held in large hall fit for an extravagant wedding with performances and beautify arranged catered food. Usually the baby sleeps though the festivities however the family of the bundle of joy are content and happy that their baby has lived the entire year.
There was also a sort of collective culture in Hawaii that left a lasting impression on me. People didn’t save good times for the weekend. Friends would show up on a Monday one person would have fruit, someone would have fish and someone else would have vegetable to create a wonderful dinner. To add to the night there was always some on there with a guitar or some sort musical instrument and we would all take turns singing songs. This happened on a Monday, just because. This community of people didn’t feel that they had to have a special event to do something special. They values life and enjoyed it every day with people they cared about. This was natural for them, the special occasion was life. I feel The family in the movie Eat Drink Man Woman, came together every night for dinner and the father taking great care into all the food to food that was prepared is the same as the community in Hawaii. Every gathering spent with family and friends can be treated with great care and the smallest moments can be treasured.
