Week 2 Homework

The world of business is fun and exciting for many entrepreneurs. Many entrepreneurs have found great success in the United States. Some businesses explore their possibilities when choosing to expand such as expanding globally and nationally. Whether they are expanding nationally or globally, this week’s assignments poses a few questions they must address before proceeding to the finish line of success: What cultural factors must US sports franchises overcome to increase popularity abroad, How can franchises ensure its products are appropriate for international markets, and Should governments protect its industries by placing tariffs on imported products? Why?

There are many cultural factors US sports franchises must overcome to increase popularity aboard. Let’s use cricket as an example, if an American franchise wanted to build exposure and expand cricket across the US, the most important step is to travel around the world to learn more about the sport. When considering traveling globally they must consider language barriers, acknowledging the difference in culture and learning to conduct business aboard. The first thing the company would need to establish is the marketplace in the country they’d like to expand to determine if their products or service will fit the needs of their society. When traveling aboard, they have to consider the cultures of the land and how their company can fit into their society. Just as I stated above, when traveling internationally you have to consider language barriers. Some companies may have to modify their business models to expand globally. Another important aspect of expanding internationally is finding the right distributor for your companies good and services. Lastly, companies must learn foreign policies for doing business abroad and importing

    Determining the Future Business Strategy of Asiasports Limited In March of 1999 the primary decision makers of Asiasports found themselves at a crossroads. “Barnes, Weir, and Gribble had to make decisions about whether the company should promote hockey outside of Hong Kong and its choice of sports properties. An implementation plan also had to be developed for the chosen strategy” (Delios 1). Although every one of their sports properties was profitable except for the World Ice Hockey 5’s event, Asiasports still experienced a loss in 1998 operations. Therefore Barnes and the primary shareholders of Asiasports were faced with a difficult question regarding the direction of their future business strategy. Should they continue to focus on developing their existing sports properties and working towards Barnes goal of bringing hockey to Asia, or should they explore options related to geographic and product diversification? Firm Analysis Asiasports was started as a sports management company to develop the growth of hockey in Hong Kong. Asiasports managed leagues and events in relation to hockey, as well as other sports such as softball and golf. The company is privately held, and “it was a young entrepreneurial company that had the financial and human resources constraints typically face by such companies” (Delios 13). A SWOT analysis and a look at the firm’s resource competitive advantages and financials provide insights into Asiasports as a company. SWOT Analysis: Appendix 1 A SWOT analysis shows that Asiasports primary strengths are its sport properties and experience in running tournaments in Hong Kong, while its greatest weaknesses are its lack of financial and HR resources.     American sports are American because they are a reflection of societal values and cultural norms during the rise of an industrializing America. These recreational activities became popular economic enterprises with specializing labor roles, set rules comparable to the standard workplace protocol in other industries at the time, and were intentionally “civilized” in such a way that they became more profitable for those in charge. This civilizing also meant a specialization of labor as many athletes became more professional with irreplaceable skills.
