Economic Growth

Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION
Economic growth is the main goal of every nation around the world. To develop globalization among countries, to produce more products, to increase wages, to create a higher level of education, to build infrastructures, to improve technology, to have a better life; are what all the people strive for. But in doing all that, does that mean that people are living a better life? Or is it just the ideal of doing better? Taking a look at it closely, the effects of economic growth are more on positive points, but what about its negative effects? One of the most common disadvantages that individuals can relate with economic growth here in the Philippines is environmental protection. As citizens try to enhance the quality of life, often times, the environment is left at stake.
As part of the society, citizens must do something about it; give some ways to solve it. One way is to conduct a study about how economic growth and the environment protection are related with one another. The De La Salle University – Dasmariñas, Mathematics Department in the College of Science, has given tasks to students which is to create a mathematical model that would fit to the theme, “Taking Responsibility in Environmental and Ecological Sustainability (TREES)”.

In order to construct a model showing the relationship between the country’s economic growth and the environmental protection applied; first, this research will discuss clearly what economic growth and environmental protection are; the negative effects of economic growth, some examples of environmental protections, and some movements in restoring the environment. Second, this study will show the gathered information that the researchers will use in order to formulate the model and finally, the model itself will be formulated, from there, we can see the connection of the economy with the environment. This research aims to give additional knowledge to the students, as well as the community people about the said subject matter (economic growth and environmental protection). It informs the government officials that economic stability goes hand in hand with the environment. Moreover, this study can help the economists and the environmentalists decide on how they can improve the country’s economic stability without sacrificing the country’s setting. They should do decisions accordingly and should not left anything behind. The information that will be gathered is based from surveys, interviews, consulted printed and non-printed sources. The study encompasses clear discussions of what economic growth and environment protection are; and the formulation of the mathematical model itself. The information that the researchers will be gathering are basically from Brgy. San Agustine 3, Dasmariñas City, Cavite.

Chapter 2: SCOPE AND LIMITATION
Scope
The study covers Barangay San Agustin 3 of Dasmariñas City in the province of Cavite in terms of its economic growth and environmental protection, particularly the factors that influence individual economic choices and how the choices of various decision makers affects the overall behavior and performance of the said barangay.
In order to act this out, the researchers will be divided and assigned to different areas such as gathering of related and significant information about the Barangay through the help of the Barangay Captain and the use of internet for more supporting files. The researchers are also looking forward to conduct a survey to at least 20 residents of Barangay San Agustin 3 and, to interview some people who are knowledgeable of the barangay’s economic and environment status for additional basis for the research. The estimated budget for the research is 1000 PHP which will be produced through the equal contribution of each member. This amount will be used for the group research expenses such as transportation fare, printing and documentation expenses, etc. to be able to comply and submit all requirements needed. The papers to be submitted will be prepared during the duration allotted for the tasks to be done with the use of some gadgets/equipments such as laptops, cameras, and other more resources for documentation. After collecting and gathering information, the researchers are expected to combine all these in order to produce a mathematical model using some topics of business calculus to show the relationship of the barangay’s economic growth and environment’s status.
Limitations
The study will not cover everything that is not concerned with managing of resources, production, distribution and consumption and factors affecting economic choices of individuals in Barangay San Agustin 3. The selection of respondents are only limited to town residents, specifically, people living in the said barangay. People to be interviewed are only those who are in the area unless they are knowledgeable about the issue. But the use of the created mathematical model is expected to be applied not only in computing/answering the area’s problem but also other areas. And lastly, the resources to be used are limited as much as possible to what is available.

Chapter 3: METHODOLOGY
The data that was gathered will be presented…
In Graphical Format by means of making graphs together with their corresponding results particularly about the factors that influence individual economic choices and how the choices of various decision makers affects the overall behavior and performance of a Barangay.
In Symbolic and Numerical Format, to show the efficiency of the mathematical model created.
In Verbal representation to explain and clearly discuss the data and information of the said Barangay. The research was conducted in Barangay San Agustin 3 of Dasmariñas City in the province of Cavite. The researchers started conducting the survey and interview on the 23rd of September and continued in the succeeding days. They conducted a survey to 25 families who live in the Barangay regarding the economic and environmental status of the Barangay. They also conducted an interview to the Barangay Captain about some information about San Agustin 3.
This research was systematically organized by following the step of IMRD which means that the introduction will be the first and will be followed by the methodology, result (presentation of the gathered data), and the discussion of the result. Mathematical Modeling and the Relative Extrema will be the techniques in calculus that will be used in the research. And to do this, an application called curvefitting will be used to show it.
All of the members will be assigned to gather information in the municipality of Dasmariñas. And for the division of work, two members will be assigned to gather information using the internet. Another two members will be assigned to prepare the questions for the survey and other things that will be needed as the gathering of information is being done. Since that there are three members who lives Dasmariñas, they will be assigned to conduct the survey. And the last member together with the three members who conducted the survey will be assigned to analyze the data and give the results.

Chapter 4: Data Presentation and Analysis
RESULTS
This chapter focuses on the presentation and analysis of data obtained.. As this study is qualitative and descriptive, interview and survey was held. Subjects were selected according to their availability at Barangay San Agustin 3, Dasmariñas City, Cavite.
According to the Barangay Captain Eddie Garcia, the population of Barangay San Agustin 3 is approximately 12,000. Every week their Barangay disposes 6-8 trucks of garbage. They mentioned that right now they haven’t launched any projects concerning environmental protection because they don’t have space for such activities. But they are intending to do some until the municipality of Dasmariñas has taken action of their request and actually they have already attended a seminar regarding environmental protection.

The growth of an economy is thought of not only as an increase in productive capacity but also as an improvement in the quality of life to the people of that economy. Given the data and values for x which represents the number of population in Barangay San Agustin 3 and y represents the time(in years), the researchers came up with a mathematical model of y=a+b/x^2 and resulting to an increasing function where population is increasing as time goes by.

In our second table, the researchers had gathered some data about the collection of garbage in every family in Barangay San Agustin 3. Given the data and values for x which represents the number of garbage collected in Barangay San Agustin 3 and y represents the number of population with the respect of time, the researchers came up with a mathematical model Y = a+b*x*ln(x) and resulting to an increasing function where the number of garbage collected is increasing as the number of population is also increasing.
A survey was given to 25 families in Barangay San Agustin 3 to get further information about the status of their Barangay. As a result 56 percent of the families have 5-7 persons in their house that gives the reason why the population of their Barangay is big. Out of the 25 families, 72 percent of them said that they dispose 1-3 plastics of garbage a day. There are 20 out of 25 families said that there family is environmental friendly and most of them they are protecting the environment by segregating their waste to biodegradable and non-biodegrable. Other families also said that they are helping by selling recyclable materials in the junk shop, recycling and some also said that they are composting their waste. But this family’s efforts are still not enough because their Barangay still disposes a lot of garbage.

CHALLENGES

One major problem that our group encountered while completing the research is the time allotted to each task. We are given one week for each task to finish. We also have some concerns with our other subjects so one week is not enough to complete each task. We had also a hard time in doing the survey because most of the people in the said Barangay are busy doing their own work. They are not responding to our questions properly. Regarding with these problems, we had to schedule our tasks properly. We fixed our schedules in order to pass the requirements on time. With the problems regarding our respondents, we just respected them and just leave their residents respectfully. We learned from this project that each one of us must be responsible especially when we need to work on the tasks. We must have a good coordination with each other and good communication to prevent further problems like misunderstandings. We spent a total of P180.00 including the transportation fare and printing expenses.

After carefully evaluating the research paper, the researchers arrived at these following recommendations for the future researchers who might have the same research topic:
The researchers must have a good location where they can gather sufficient information that they can use in their research.
Future researchers must have concrete basis for the research like more interview should be conducted and through increasing the number of respondents.
The researchers should maximize the time allotted for each task.
The researchers must study and analyze the main topic before conducting the research.
The researchers must maximize the use of available resources in order to come up with a good quality paper.
