Economics - Product Differentiation in Monopoly
Monopolies are firms that are the sole or dominant suppliers of a good or service in a given market. And what sets apart monopolies from competitive firms is “market power”- the ability of a firm to affect the market price.
Price discrimination is the business practice of selling the same good at different prices to different customers, even though the cost of production is the same for all customers. Only monopolies can practice price discrimination, because otherwise competition would prevent price discrimination. Price discrimination increases the monopolist’s profits, reduces the consumer surplus and reduces the deadweight loss. (the buyers of the lower-priced product should not be able to resell the product to the higher-priced market. Otherwise, the monopoly will not be able to maintain price differentials.)
The monopolist must be able to identify segments of the market that are willing to pay different prices, and then market its products accordingly. A common technique to achieve this is by making it harder to get the lower prices, since wealthier consumers value their time more than their money.
Some ways the monopolistic firms can implement discriminatory pricing are;
• Linear Approximation Technique or Markup Pricing Technique
• Personalized Pricing – extracting the maximum amount a customer is willing to pay for the product.
• Coupons and Rebates – providing coupons to attract more customers or providing personalized discounts.
• Bulk pricing – offering lower prices when customer buys a huge quantity of the same product.
• Bundling - joining products or services together in order to sell them as a single combined unit.
• Block pricing - Charging more for the first set of the product, then less for each additional product bought by the same consumer.
• Group Pricing- charging different customers different price based on factors such as race, gender, age, abilities etc. and also “psychographic segmentation”- dividing consumers based on their

The most common ones found in the business world today are sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations. From these you will also find monopolies and oligopolies. Economists assume there are a number of different buyers and sellers in the market which leads to competition which allows prices to change in response to changes in supply and demand.(1) In many industries you there are substitutes for products, so if one type of product becomes too expensive the consumer can choose an alternative product that is cheaper, or one of better quality. This is called perfect competition within different companies. However, in some industries there are no substitutes for a product. In a market with only one supplier of a good or service, the producer can control the price meaning that the consumer does not have a choice, cannot maximize his or her total utility, and has very little to no influence over the price of the good or service they require. This is called a monopoly, where the single business is the industry. In slight contrast, you have the oligopoly which is at least two companies competing for market share. In an oligopoly, products are usually very similar, if not identical to each other, and in order to make their product more attractive they will lower their prices, forcing the other one out of the market until that firm lowers their price. Finally, the fourth type of business structure is called monopolistic competition. Like an oligopoly, these firms produce similar or identical products where substitute products usually aren’t available, although monopolistic competition is between many firms, where an oligopoly is usually two or three different companies controlling the market.     One key factor in oligopolies is that each firm/company explicitly takes other firms’ likely responses into account when setting prices, launching new products, etc. For this reason, there is significant ‘friendly’ competition between firms. They each know that it is in their own best interests to maintain a stable price, for if they lower their prices, their competitors will do the same and knock out any advantage the original firm was hoping to gain with lower prices. If they raise their prices, the competitors will not follow suit and will therefore steal away all the customers of the higher priced product.
