QUESTION 1:
What international events influenced the development of environmental education and education for sustainability?
1945 – The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) is created. The main concern of this organization is developing education mainly focusing on the environment and its conservation.
1948 – The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is created. This fund is created with the intent to conserve wild life and animals.
1972 – The United Nations Environment Programme is formed. A programme concerned with discussing environmental matters by rich and poor nations alike. In 1975 their first conference is held in Yugoslavia. In 1977 the Tbilisi conference is held, here the 12 guiding principles regarding environmental education are established.
1980 - A document on a World Conservation Strategy is formed, with a strong emphasis on environmental education.
1992 – The treaty on environmental education for sustainable societies is created.
1997 – The Earth summit is held. With the goal to re-emphasize the role of environmental education in the supporting of a sustainable development.
2002 – The WSSD is held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Here the role of education regarding sustaining the environment is emphasized.
QUESTION 2:
2.1
Some of the values I would suggest the school to adopt would be values such
as harmonious living within ecological systems, caring, responsibility and a responsible attitude towards nature. Also a promotion of continuity and community within cultures and society, and between all living things.
2.2
Some skills I would consider important do develop would be skills such as
learning not to litter. Or maybe recycling and/or cleaning littered environments.
Learning to save electricity, by not wasting electricity by forgetting to switch off appliances after using them. Also to learn the kids not to waste water. By checking
