Edger Allen Poe's Unexpected Death
Edger Allen Poe was an amazing author but his home life was far from perfect life. There is much controversy surrounding Poe’s unexpected death. Some believed that Poe had died of alcoholism while others believed that he had died of rabies/encephalitis. However, it is plausible that Poe had died of rabies/encephalitis because of the symptoms and the witness accounts on the night that Poe died.
What different doctor’s thoughts and opinions on how Poe may have died. Dr, Henry Wilde had said he knows when “Poe had all of the features of encephalic rabies when he entered the hospital”. (Benitez 187) Dr Henry Wilde was an expert on the symptoms and cases of encephalic rabies, and knows that Poe almost had the same exact symptoms. “The Writer was so sensitive to alcohol that a glass of wine would make him very ill said in his reports” (Benitez 188). This quote really sticks out because if Poe got sick on one glass of wine he would have stopped drinking altogether to stop from getting very sick.” Data published by the CFD.P indicates

“Poe was traveling during the worst of the winter months so he might have had a fever when he left his home so it possibly caused Poe to have encephalitis.” (Silvermen187) The wintery weather like conditions may have caused Poe to have a sickness which might have not helped him in his rabies symptoms. “When Poe was found he was not in his clothes when he was found so what happened to Poe from point a to point b.” (Benitez187) What had happened to Poe when he started his journey to make him be in the state that he died in. “Only some of the rabies victims can’t remember anything about getting bit by an animal.” (Benitez190) This shows how Poe couldn’t remember anything about getting bitten when he was found. Poe’s final days are unknown on what he did or where he went to so there are many different ways people think about what Poe did on his final

On October 3, 1849, Edgar was found in the bathroom at the Gunnell’s Hall, a public house that was being used as a polling place for an election. The magazine editor, Joseph Snodgrass, sent Poe to the Washington College Hospital, where he spent his last days in and out of consciousness, far away from home, and surrounded by nothing but strangers. They were never able to explain what happened to him to cause any of this. On October 7, 1849, only at the age of…

Edgar Allan Poe was the voice of a culture when it came to literature. His works were widely read and loved by many of the people in his time. Poe used themes that people were afraid of, he preyed on people’s most socially rooted fears and made people see them presented in front of them. In Critical Theory Today, Lois Tyson says, “our subjectivity, or selfhood is shaped by and shapes the culture into we were born” (284). In the same way, you can say that Edgar Allan Poe’s writing was shaped by the world he was born into. He was born into a world that was the blossoming of science. He was born into a world in the midst of a great change from the ideals of religion and art governing society morphing into a society governed by scientific fact and reason. And, mostly, he was born into a world that feared death. One of the most present fears in society at the time was a fear of premature…

. . . Mr. Poe is at once the most discriminating, philosophical, and fearless critic upon imaginative works who has written in America. It may be that we should qualify our remark a little, and say that he might be, rather than that he always is, for he seems sometimes to mistake his phial of prussic-acid for his inkstand.” — (James Russell Lowell, “Edgar Allan Poe,” Graham’s Magazine, February 1845.) Although he was heavily criticized, many seemed to view him as genius. “That perfection of horror which abounds in his writings, has been unjustly attributed to some moral defect in the man. But I perceive not why the competent critic should fall into this error. Of all authors, ancient or modern, Poe has given us the least of himself in his works. He wrote as an artist. He intuitively saw what Schiller has so well expressed, that it is an universal phenomenon of our nature that the mournful, the fearful, even the horrible, allures with irresistible…

According to the researcher and writer of “Poe’s Death is Rewritten as Case of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol” Dr. R Michael Benitez believes it was because of rabies. Dr. Benitez states in his article that Poe was indeed hallucinating, and shouting at imaginary companions (187-188). Also, when woken up one day Poe refused to drink alcohol and could only drink water with great difficulty (187). Dr. Benitez also states that is a common case of rabies because “Rabies victims frequently exhibit hydrophobia or a fear for water because it is painful to swallow” (187). Poe didn’t know where he was, and couldn’t remember anything as well. Dr. Benitez also states when Poe came to him he was not drunk, and there was no evidence of him being bitten. Statistics show that most human rabies victims do not remember being bitten, and bites takes about a year to appear…

First, Poe died from excessive alcohol poisoning because there is not much evidence that supports the face that he died from rabies. When Poe was brought into the hospital, there was no evidence of an animal bite or scratch, a sign that the patient might have rabies. Additionally, rabies and alcohol poisoning share some similar symptoms, such as delirium, a half-concious and dream-like state, so it is hard to tell if it was rabies.…

In a letter Benedetto wrote he states, “Dr. Benitez admits the primary weakness of his theory- lack of evidence of a bite or scratch” (Benedetto 189). Dr. Benitez’s statement of there being a lack of a bite or scratch shows that rabies could not be an option for Poe’s death. Robert Benedetto explains that Poe’s cat, Caterina, Showed no signs of rabies (189). Without any signs of rabies on his beloved cat, Caterina proves that Poe’s cat did not give him rabies. As said in Benedetto’s letter, “Dr. R. Michael Benitez, an assistant professor of medicine at Maryland University Medical Center, is wrong to ascribe the death of Edgar Allan Poe to rabies through animal infection than to the traditional maintained caused alcoholism (Benedetto 189). Dr. R. Michael Benitez was wrong to assign Poe’s death to rabies with the lack of proper evidence. With no evidence that proves that Poe died from rabies it is wrong to label the cause of from…
