Editorial on "Lane-splitting"
10 October 2013
Dear Mr. Editor,
I am writing this letter in hope of legalizing motorcycle lane splitting in more US states. Motorcycle lane splitting is currently only legal in California and in a few other countries. Many people believe that lane splitting is a dangerous act that motorcyclist do to navigate through traffic. However lane splitting is done to prevent crashes and to help be more visual to other drivers. Lane splitting is legal in California mainly due to California Highway Patrol recommending the act. There are some rules within lane splitting that have recently been put into place to clear up confusion on the law. US DOT FARS database shows that fatalities from rear end collisions into motorcycles are 30% lower in California than in Florida or Texas. Lane splitting is recommended and safe when done responsibly.
I used to think that lane splitting was a foolish act that motorcyclist did until I started riding myself. After taking the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course and getting my Motorcycle licensee, I learned the reasoning for splitting lanes. I have witnessed other motorcycle riders get rear ended at stop lights because drivers were not paying attention. Usually getting rear ended isn’t that big of a deal if you’re in a car, but getting rear ended on a motorcycle can be fatal. I wouldn’t recommend splitting lanes to inexperienced riders but when you feel comfortable I would definitely tell them to do it for the safety. The risk of being hit by other vehicles on the road is already high enough, legalizing lane splitting in more states would greatly reduce the risk for riders. Now that I am comfortable splitting lanes myself I do it all the time if possible. One thing I always remember is “If you can’t fit, don’t split”.
Mr. Editor, please consider my view on motorcycle lane splitting. If more road users are aware of the reasoning behind splitting lanes then the road would be a safer place for both riders and drivers. I hope the voters and

Don’t even get me started with merging. Holy crap! What an ordeal in California. Especially down here in San Diego. Yes, lets all travel on the right side of an 8 lane highway. (8 meaning 4 lanes per side). I mean come on, at the very least take the second to the right lane. Like I’ve always said since I was younger, I think the DMV has paid people to drive slow, rubber neck, break check, and avoid using their turning signals.…

As for myself, I don’t think it is enough to change or lift the U.S speed limits because I believe that speed does kill, Americans are not properly educated and trained, and everyday driving should not be viewed as “fun”. Driving is very serious because it can result in deaths. While the United States already deals with many speed related fatalities every day, I don’t think that getting rid of our speed limits or raising it to a higher speed will lower the rates of car accidents/deaths. Although the “stringent safety requirements imposed by the Department of Transportation for vehicles sold in the United States ensure that our cars and trucks are the safest in the world” (Knutson 621) It does not mean that the person getting behind the wheel is the safest person, and for that reason we have speed limits to protect our lives the best way it possibly…

In the end of Voas 's article, after making numerous references as well as…

Laws change on a daily basis, some of them effect the old, yet some effect the young. Laws are set forth to govern what we do to ensure fairness, equality, and safety for others. Recently new laws have been passed which effect new drivers. These laws mainly pertain to the younger generation of driver mainly teenagers. I believe that the current laws passed pertaining to what can and cannot be done by a new driver are a good thing. The law has changed several ways. First, new driver cannot and should not have anyone ride in the car with him or her unless it is a family member. Second, cell phones are not allowed and should not be allowed to be used by new licensee. And third, the minimum number of training hours should increase and has increased from 40 hours to 60 hours.…

Having painted bike lanes on streets and roads help both bicyclists and motorists stay in safer, more central positions in their respective lanes. Bicyclists are also less likely to ride on sidewalks when on street bike lanes exist. When they ride on sidewalks, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission studies have shown that it increases their accident risk 25 times more. This occurs primarily because motorists pulling onto roadways tend to focus on street traffic. As a result, a driver may fail to see sidewalk bicyclists and collide with them when the cyclists cross a driveway where motorists are merging into roadway…

Safety is the most important thing. Motorcyclists should be responsible for their lives and the lives of others. Sometimes motorcyclists are reckless and don’t make good decisions. That is why there needs to be a law requiring every motorcyclist to wear a helmet. It’s understandable that riders want their freedom, but after they get in an accident and get head injuries, their freedom wouldn’t matter anymore. When freedom and pride clash with being safe, being safe most likely would outweigh everything.…

In any two vehicle collision, the smallest vehicle sustains the most damage. The occupants also have a higher injury and fatality risk. This means that the motorcyclist always loses in collisions with other types of vehicles. In addition, their two wheels make them less stable in poor road and weather conditions. Their lack of a protective cage, seat belts, and airbags mean that they rarely survive collisions unscathed.…

Motorcycles don’t posses many safety features that protect their rider. A car contains seat belts, airbags, four wheels for stability, and more; these are important features that help reduce accident and fatality rates. These issues only add to the main problem which is the drivers themselves, I am talking about both motorcycle rider and automobile driver. These two figures represent the majority of those on the streets, they are either inexperienced drivers or to comfortable with their driving habits and lack the attention needed to avoid situations that can arise quickly. Motorcycle safety is something not only riders need to be taught but other motorists as well; educating the population can not only reduce accidents but save lives.…
