Edmund was one of the two children of Peter and Martha Eyre Booth. The same sickness(meningitis) killed his father. And he had a older brother named Henry. And he also married Mary ann Walworth who was also deaf. Later on they had 4 children Thomas,Harriet,Harriet emma, and Frank.
He was one of the first students of Laurent Clerc and Thomas H. Gallaudet. Edmund visited his school with his older brother and recalled “I was among strangers but knew i was home”. He also graduated at the Hartford Asylum in 1830. The Hartford …show more content…
Asylum was known as the education for the deaf and dumb. And after graduating he became a teacher for deaf children.
Booth had many occupations throughout his life. He started as a teacher, teaching deaf children. Then he moved west to join the california gold rush. He was also a engineer and RAEing at oxford university. His final occupation was an editor at the Anamosa Eureka newspaper, which he purchased and ran for a number of years.
On March 25,1905 Edmund Booth died . It was said that he was a perfect example of virtually everything. Edmund had died in his home in Anamosa,Massachusetts. Also he was only 95 when he died. And another statement made was that he characterized an american legend of his century.
Edmund Booth had many accomplishments to be proud of. The reason he had so many was because of all his jobs. But his most memorable accomplishment was that he helped the deaf community in a lot of ways. He had established the Iowa school for the deaf, taught deaf children, and helped people understand that deaf people are no different from them. He was also well known as a deaf pioneer.
The contribution edmund made to society was a good contribution.
One of the reason was because he had helped in many ways. He taught the deaf many things and helped them become more comfortable in the world. He was a really smart man and he established the Iowa deaf school. He also raised awareness of the evils of slavery. And he also wrote a book.
I think one of Edmund Booth’s qualities was that he had so many jobs and that he could do all of them. He must've been a smart man to have done so much in his life. It was also interesting to me that he was a pioneer and was commonly known as one. Also that he was supposed to be one of the oldest editors in america. Another quality about Edmund was that he was smart and helped people in many ways. Edmund Booth was one of the first recorded and known enterprising deaf business owners. He also taught at the same school he graduated from which was the Hartford Asylum. He wrote a book too and it was called “Dialogue between greek patriot and an educated american deaf and dumb man”. And he founded the deaf school of Iowa which is where he also lived (Anamosa,Iowa). He also weighed 210 Lbs and was 6ft 3” and had a full beard that was
full.
Also they said that Edmund perfectly had fit a igneous pioneer but it was different because he was a deaf man. He became a respected senior statesman of the american deaf community. Speaking of the deaf community he helped found the National Association of the deaf at a meeting in cincinnati from all over the U.S. at a meeting in cincinnati. He was nominated presidency and also chaired at the gathering . But he said no because he thought he was too old.
Booth was also a role model or leader in many ways. And was a legend among the deaf of the united states. Besides being a legend among the deaf he defended sign language. He also defended the integration of the deaf for the community and listeners. But he had kept his life rather isolated from his fellow fates.
When he was old he finally started to participate in activities that were directly in the deaf community. Which is the reason he had helped found the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). The year he had helped found the NAD was 1880,which he also received a honorary medal from gallaudet university. His honorary medal was for a master in arts. But he received his award at the “then” gallaudet university.
Iowa school for the deaf was established because of this man. He had many talents/jobs he went from being a teacher to a poet. Besides helping the deaf community booth also made many efforts to raise awareness of the evils of slavery. Retired from being an editor and purchased the company that ran for a number of years.
