THREE INSTITUTIONS WITH ONE GOAL IN MIND
2
When students make the decision to go to college, it can be a decision based on many factors. From parent pressure to cost, to characteristics or student organizations offered, the college choice process can have multiple influences and can cause dilemmas for students (Renn and Reason, 2012). Since there are various types of institutions, ranging from private to public, residential to commuter and many other characteristics, students must decide on which school best meet their needs. Banning and Strange would argue that students will gravitate toward an environment where they feel included, safe, involved as well as allow them opportunities to have interactions that are both positive and productive to the academic success (2001).
This paper will give a brief overview and analysis on the history, mission, student demographics, and tuition costs at three institutions: Madonna University, University of
Michigan Dearborn, and Henry Ford College. In addition, it will analyze some similarities each institution possess as well as highlight some differences among their campus environments, using Banning and Kaiser’s campus ecology theory as a framework. Renn and Reason (2012) referenced the campus ecology theory, where they noted this framework measured four goals when analyzing colleges and universities: inclusion, safety, involvement and community building. This paper will only focus on one of those goals, inclusion, and the programs each institution offers to students to promote student success.
