As educators, what percentage of unoriginal work should be admissible for a well written assignment? I am speaking of the appropriate use of direct quotations. That is the only acceptable form of unoriginal work.
Therefore, as educators discuss this important topic.
Students must be honest and truthful with using direct quotations. Plagiarism is the use of someone else's work, words, or ideas as if they were your own. Unfortunately, I don’t have to deal with the plagiarism aspect in the science lab. But, as an educator if, I found that a student has used someone direct quotes or turned in work completed by someone else. I would discuss the plagiarizing rules with the student, contact the parents, and allow the student the opportunity to rewrite the paper. I would make sure to explain the importance of plagiarism to students upon assigning assignments to students each time. I will have them to sign a plagiarism contract that the student turns in with each assignment. Stating this is their original work and the paper is free of plagiarism.
These are the three reasons I will explain to students not to plagiarize:
1. That the deepest consequence to plagiarizing is the detriment to your intellectual and moral development: you won’t learn anything, and your ethics will be corrupted.
2. That giving credit where it’s due but adding your own reflection will get you higher grades than putting your name on someone else’s work. In an academic context, it counts more to show your ideas in conversation than to try to present them as your own.
3. Finally, colleges, and universities punish academic dishonesty severely. That the most common penalty is suspension from college, or university, but any students caught plagiarizing are also subject to lowered or failing grades as well as the possibility of expulsion. Be sure to review your college or university Academic Integrity Policy before even writing the paper.
