Munch’s childhood was somewhat of a tragic one. When he was five his mother passed away, and at the age of fourteen his oldest sister passed away, both as a result of tuberculosis. Munch’s father and brother also passed away while he was still young and another one of his sisters became mentally ill while he was still in his youth. These tragic events had a major influence on the themes surrounding his art work.
