Toni Morrison was born on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio. Her parents moved from southern America to Ohio to avoid southern racism. Due to her parents, Morrison grew up surrounded by African American cultures, through folktales and songs. Her childhood led Morrison to write stories about black people. This good circumstance allowed her to focus on what she loved. She really loved literature, so she took Latin in school to read the original version of great works of European literature. After graduating Lorain high school, Toni Morrison majored in English at Howard University. She kept studying in Cornell University after graduating from Howard University. She taught English at Texas Southern University from 1955 to 1957, then returned to Howard University to teach English. Toni Morrison spent her adolescence with literature and English, because she loved both of them. Her adult career shows that if someone does what he or she likes professionally and impassionedly, that ‘one’ will be successful.
In 1958, while teaching at Howard University, Toni Morrison married Harold Morrison, who was a Jamaican architect. They had two children and got divorced in 1964. After the divorce, Morrison worked as an editor. As an editor, she tried to bring black literature into mainstream by editing many African American writers
