Independence is the condition of an individual to live without depending on other people and to act without other person’s ideas or opinions. In an American Romantic Fantasy film directed by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands, the meaning of independence is greatly exemplified. The movie shows the story of an unfinished creation, named Edward, who is living in an isolated gothic castle and who has scissors as his hands. Being virtually kind and hurtless, he is taken home by Peg Boggs, a local Avon saleswoman, who happens to stop by in the castle and found Edward there. Pegg’s husband Bill and his young son Kevin sincerely accepts and welcomes him home, He falls in love with Kim, Pegg’s beautiful daughter, who initially feels terrified when he first met Edward in her room. Being skilled at hedge-trimming and having an amazing ability to cut hair, he becomes friends with the whole neighbourhood. He later becomes involved in a crime and accused of something he did not do causing the main characters to think independently and go back to the world they used to be.
