Ed Gein was born 1906, in Plainview, Wisconsin. His father was a violent alcoholic, and his mother an obsessive Lutheran. His mother kept Ed, and his brother Henry, from any outside influence. Allowing them only to go to school, and return home. His mother often told them bible stories, and preached about how evil alcohol and women were. Ed Gein’s first murder could have been his brother, Henry, because he started to resent their mother. Henry didn’t share his mother’s opinion of the world, and even became worried about how close Ed and their mother had become. In 1944 during a wildfire on the property, Ed ran to the police stating that he had lost his brother in the fire. After alerting the authorities, Ed led them directly to where the body was. Henry was lying on the ground with blunt trauma to the side of his head, his clothes were also unburned. Police dismissed this evidence, and coroner said he died of asphyxiation. Gein was never formally charged with his brother’s murder.…

Henry Ossawa Tanner was one of the first African American painters that made his claim to fame. He established a lot of “firsts” in that he was also the first African American student at his art academy. Tanner is most notorious for painting and drawing. The artist was young when he was in Paris and decided to pursue art in 1981. During this time, modernism was coming to an end and transitioning to post modernism. By examining multiple pieces of his work, Tanner is most concerned with subjects and emphasizes specific features through color, light, and shadowing. Many of his pieces have more than one person depicted which indicates a strong, trusting bond and an affinity for relationships with people. This makes sense in that Tanner lived in a time when African Americans were not accepted so he had to stick close to family and friends, those of whom he knew he could trust. Tanner also produced artwork with wide-angled scenery including trees, skies, ocean, and bridges, to name a few. Perhaps these are creations that were taken into account by Tanner when his mother reminisced and described her views about her travels using the Underground Railroad.…

Everybody breaks bad sometimes. When I was a child, I loved going for the cookie jar before dinner, even though I was told “No.” I can recall many adventures through “haunted caves” and dares to go and steal something from yard of the neighborhood “witch”. All of humanity at some point has felt this feeling: the urge to break away from what we know as right in order to give us a special thrill. College students do this through drinking and drugs, and as they grow into adults do it through lying and cheating about what they are doing. But what if the reasons they are doing these bad things are for a greater good? What if I am getting a cookie before dinner because I want to share it with my friend who never gets to eat cookies? On the other…

Peter Abelard was a French philosopher and theologian during twelfth-century Europe. Despite the fact that there were schools specifically with monasteries and cathedrals, a new way of learning soon arose during his time. He was known for exemplifying this new model of learning. Abelard, like many other Philosophers during the olden times, paved his way into being successful by establishing his own way of thinking and teaching. Along with this recognition, undeniably came criticism too. Some of his scholars even felt threatened by him and coerced church officials to question his doings. The success Abelard gained teaching new ways of learning eventually led him to appear in front of church officials.…
