The Effects of War on Civilians
Background
War is as old as human civilization. It has existed since the first cities in what is now modern day Iraq appeared to now. It has affected the lives of billions of civilians. It has changed the course of history. Some of the most devastating wars were WW1, WW2, the American civil war, and the Syrian civil war. These wars have cost the lives of millions of people. These wars have helped many, but have also cost the lives of many. War is a very messy thing. It is very chaotic and unpredictable. A war can last from 1 hour to over 100 years. It enables countries to gain new land and resources which it can then give to its citizens. It also enables citizens to overthrow governments they don’t like, such as the British being overthrown by the colonists during the American Revolution, and keeps civilization from becoming stagnant. It also enables countries to defend themselves from invaders if necessary. It also provides people with jobs as they can make weapons and munitions for soldiers, helping drive the economy. There are many reasons for going to war. These can be good or evil depending on an individual's viewpoints. Some people think war is necessary for protecting nations, gaining access to raw materials and land, freeing oppressed people, and keeping order upheld. However a lot of people think war is destructive to humanity and society. This is because war can cause people to lose their homes and jobs forcing them to migrate to different nations to find jobs and security. They also have to deal with refugee camps which are unsanitary and crowded. The journey there is also dangerous as the boats used are overcrowded and very likely to sink in the ocean, while land trips are dangerous as people can get lost or their vehicle breaks down leaving them stranded and in risk of exposure to dangerous environments, such as deserts or rainforests. They may not always get jobs or benefits forcing them to crimes such as robbery or drug dealing to financially support their families, lest they end up homeless and on the streets. They can also suffer from PTSD, the symptoms of which include insomnia, easily being startled, being withdrawn, and, in some cases, hallucinations. This can be one of the reasons why some refugees have a hard time getting a job. Governments often do not want to pay to get refugees mental help, however a good amount of them obviously need help.
