In order to understand the concept of surface are, the students will need to have a few prerequisite skills. Those are;
1. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division skills.
2. How to use a ruler.
3. Difference between surface area and area of an object.
4. Know how to determine the width and length of and object.
For a student to understand the steps necessary to turn a 2D object into a 3D object, I will assist them. I will use a design called a net to demonstrate how to build a cube. I will start by taping the top portion of the cross to the two side portions of the net. I will then take the bottom portion of the cross and tape those portions to different sections of the other squares until the cube is made. I will explain the difference of the area and surface area. I will explain that area is the measurement of the surface of the shape and surface area is the outer area of a 3D object. They will watch as I turn a two dimensional cross into a three dimensional cube. I will demonstrate finding the area by measuring one of the six squares in the net by using the formula Length * Width (L*W), which is the formula for the area of the cube. I will count how many squares I have in the net, which is six. I will demonstrate that by multiplying
