JFT2 Task 1 Detailed Guidance
A1. Bill Bailey You will want to read through the theories of motivation found in chapter 8 of your textbook and select the theory that you believe would be most appropriate for Bill Bailey to use, taking into consideration his position on the merger. Now you have the opportunity to show that you can take a theory and show, via discussion, how one would implement each of the components of a theory to successfully utilize the theory in real life. To do this you will need to discuss specifically what Bill might do to implement each of the parts of the theory.
A2. Scott Parker Similar to A1 above, you will want to read through the theories of motivation found in chapter 8 of your textbook and select the theory that you believe would be most appropriate for Scott Parker to use, taking into consideration his position on the merger. Now you have the opportunity to show that you can take a theory and show, via discussion, how one would implement each of the components of a theory to successfully utilize the theory in real life. To do this you will need to discuss specifically what Bill might do to implement each of the parts of the theory. …show more content…
A3.
Power You will want to refer to Chapter 15 in the text for discussions on power. Here you might include a discussion of the different types of power that are discussed in the text as well as the five bases of power discussed in the text. You would want to discuss what personal power is, what positional power is, and how they relate. In other words, does one effect the other? If so, how? (e.g. can one¿s personal power strengthen one¿s positional power? These are some questions that you might discuss to provide a satisfactory
answer.
A3a. Positional Power You will want to discuss positional power (same thing as legitimate power). What is it? Where does it come from? How can Anne use it to lead the merger? What might be her expectations of those she leads based upon her positional power? These are some questions that you might discuss to provide a satisfactory answer.
A3b. Personal Power You will want to discuss personal power (same thing as referent power). What is it? Where does it come from? Where does Anne¿s personal power come from? How can she use it to help Lockhart do well in his new role? Are there personal attributes that can both strengthen personal power and that can also help others to feel empowered in their own roles? Have you ever had a manager that, because of personal attributes, you felt freer to operate as you would like? Or, you felt more comfortable taking risks? Or, you felt empowered to take charge? These are some questions that you might discuss to provide a satisfactory answer.
There are really three things that need to be known in order to answer this question: First, what makes up Anne¿s personal power. Second, what does it mean to empower someone. Finally, how can Anne use her personal power (e.g. those natural talents/attributes of which her personal power consists) to empower Lockhart.
A4. Organizational Performance The symphony musicians are unionized and through representation they have secured year-long, above average pay salary contracts. Some questions you might discuss are: What might employees fear regarding their contracts, given an organizational change? What other issues might the musicians be concerned about? Might they be concerned about their future funding? Or about the new organizations focus and whether or not it will continue to support them in the way that the symphony did? Etc. etc. There are many things that you might pick out of the case study. Just imagine that you were one of the musicians and that you had the environment, support, funding, salary etc. etc. that these musicians had. What might you be concerned about losing or changing if you were anticipating a merger?
A4a. Recommendation Once you have discussed potential issues with the musicians in A4 above you will want to provide recommendations with support on how Anne could deal with those issues.
A5. Influence Tactics Nine influence tactics are discussed in Chapter 15 of the text. You will want to understand each of these tactics and then identify the ones that would be most appropriate for Anne to use in order to persuade people to endorse the merger. Once you identify the tactics that would be appropriate for her to use, you should make a good case for each tactic. (This may mean identifying information from the case that supports which tactics are most appropriate or may work best given the scenario.)
B. In-Text Citations and References in APA Format Every reference that is listed on the Reference list should have been cited in-text in your response. If you did not cite something in-text it should be taken off of this reference list. However, at minimum you should cite the case study and the course textbook and there should be corresponding in-text citations within your response.
