In a variety of athletic sports the risk of injury is prevalent, however it can be decreased with proper training methods. A common training technique used is plyometrics. Plyometrics is primarily used to increase overall strength and short term explosiveness by focusing on the muscle tendon complex; MTC involves the stretch-shortening cycle, which is an eccentric action followed by a rapid concentric action. The elastic energy stored within the muscle is used to produce a significant additional force (Miller et al. 2006). Kung Fu is both defensive and offensive because of the cultural influences. Kung Fu is a Chinese Martial Art with many variations in which it strengthens one’s mind and body. Since Kung Fu was created about a hundred years after the Zhou Dynasty, also known as the “period of warring states”, it was crucial that Kung Fu need to include both an offensive portion and a defensive portion. Chinese Martial Arts usually focuses a lot on one’s offense. In order to achieve the skills needed to be a good Kung Fuist, one needs to be a hard worker and have a lot of patience. After working hard, one will get the advantage of using one’s entire body as a weapon. In general, Kung Fu is more aggressive and is usually more offensive because it uses an equal or greater force to both fend off attacks and to attack. In addition, Kung Fu uses many fast combinations of punches and kicks to one’s advantage. When using a fast combination of attacks, the defender would have a difficult time defending all the attacks thrown at them by the attacker. Since Kung Fu tends to have a narrow stance, it gives one an advantage. In addition to the strong offense, self-defense is also taught in Kung Fu. The self-defenses learned in Kung Fu are relevant when one is being attacked…

When is the most important time to know how to defend oneself? “When being attacked” is the almost instantaneous response. This is partially true, but it is even more important to know self-defense before an encounter with danger. A split second head start from noticing a person who is preparing to strike and taking a corresponding defensive stance could make all the difference in the outcome. It is incredibly important to learn self-defense tactics to prevent harm from an attacker. An online article titled “How to Defend Yourself” attempts to solve the problems of injury, rape, death, and theft associated with a lack of knowledge of self-defense and safety precautions. To do so, the article assumes that the reader is frightful of attack from a bully, fearful of an attack by random, wants to avoid altercations, and/or is too unobservant to remain safe while outdoors. While the website is geared towards young adults and children based on its “anti-bullying” campaign, the article’s message applies to people of all ages. There are many ways to defend oneself from attack, both verbally and nonverbally, of which most people may not know.…
