Comparative Analysis
“The Portrait of Eleanor of Toledo” vs. “Self-portrait with Isabella Brandt” Bronzino’s Portrait of Eleanor of Toledo well known by its delicate thus realistic description of the lady and her son. The oil on panel painting depicts Eleanor of Toledo resting her hand on the shoulders of a boy presumed to be one of her sons. Eleanor is presented as an example of a good mother thus the painting presents the theme of good motherhood for prosperity of the society. Pieter Paul Rubens’ Self-portrait with Isabella Brandt, on the other hand, is an oil on canvas painting that expresses high-class contentedness, strong affection, and substantial affluence all that symbolize happy matrimony. The uniqueness of the two paintings makes it interesting to analyze their similarities and differences, since both painters use background setting to highlight their figures, and amplify this effect through juxtaposing the color and the light in the paintings. In as much as light come from imaginary sources in both cases, compared to Bronzino’s painting, Pieter Paul Rubens’ painting is darker in value. The only area of highlight in Rubens’ painting is the left background that indicates the skyline. Nevertheless, the whole background in Bronzino’s painting is showing light blue color enhancing the illumination of the area. Moreover, Rubens’ painting has a larger cast shadow compared to Bronzino’s painting, and displays minimal contrast of light and dark when compared to Bronzino’s painting that shows full contrast between light and dark (Sayre, 2012).
