In his 2011 article, “Reliance on Online Materials Hinders Learning Potential for Students,” David Smith attempts to build upon student’s obligated online interaction to make a case against online classes. Smith first shows how much today’s learners must use online materials by using the example of his own Alma Mater. By referencing his own experience at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln, with MyRED and EBSCO search engine, Smith lays the grounds for the focus of his argument. He then attempts to use what seem to be personal examples of experience with online coursework while begging the question through repeated examples. By failing to establish the credibility of his facts, attempting to force his own authority over the subject, and poorly organizing his thoughts, Smith fails to create a strong and compelling argument against online classes and the internet as a resource.…

Individuals choose to learn online because of the flexibility it provides to the student who also has other roles and responsibilities. Though online learning is flexible, the online student faces challenges such as learning how to be an online student, demonstrating effective time management skills, getting familiar with the technology, and learning how to connect with other students and faculty (Stavredes and Herder, 2012). A major role of online instructors is understanding and helping online students overcome the constraints of being an online student and help to push them to their goal of achieving an advanced degree. For faculty teaching online, the methods may be different than the faculty who teach face to face classes. There is no single approach being taken by academic institutions to provide online faculty the skills necessary to teach online. Allen and Seaman (2009) stated, “Only 19 percent of institutions with online offerings report that they have no training or mentoring programs for their online teaching faculty” (p. 3). Allen and Seaman (2009) also stated, “The most common training approaches for online faculty are internally run training courses (65 percent) and informal mentoring (59…

In an article penned by Mark Taormino, President or Learning Development Partners, Inc., of Las Vegas, Nevada, he states that “matching student learning preferences with appropriate learning opportunities is of high importance. Some students might not enjoy a high level of reliance on technology mediated instruction and communication, which could lead to a decision to pursue a more traditional education delivery path.” Indeed, it is very likely that the path of online learning may not actually accomplish true learning for every type of student, and unfortunately not every individual who seeks out an education via distance learning is aware of this possibility before they begin their journey.…
