Element of the Story ' the Last Leaf '
Figure [ 1 ]
ATTY. FELIPE L. GOZON
Chairman, President and CEO
GMA Network, Inc

Mater Entrepreneur 2004

Atty. Felipe L. Gozon is credited for the impressive turnaround in recent years of GMA Network, Inc., a conglomerate of companies engaged in radio and TV broadcasting, post production services, filmmaking, music recording, and new media.

Atty. Gozon was part of the triumvirate which, in the mid-1970’s, brought GMA from the original American owner, Mr. Robert "Uncle Bob" Stewart. The other two major owners were Gozon’s brother-in-law Menardo Jimenez and former Rizal Congressman Gilberto Davit, now represented by chief operating officer EVP Jimmy Davit, Jr. At first, Atty. Gozon served as GMA’s Chairman while Jimenez served as CEO.

GMA occupied the No. 1 slot for some time, but slipped to second place in the mid-1980s. When Atty. Gozon assumed leadership of the network in 2000, he rallied everyone to strive to be No. 1 again. All his efforts paid off when GMA grabbed the No. 1 spot in the daytime slot on December 23, 2003, and the network has been on the rise since then.

GMA currently has a network of 46 VHF stations and can be seen via satellite in a number of households in Asia, Australia, and Hawaii. It can also be heard on airwaves through AM and FM stations in Manila and Cebu and through 27 RGMA radio stations throughout the country. GMA recently launched its international channel.

Among his plans for the network are the re-launching of its UHF channel and the raising of additional capital through GMA’s initial public offering in the first quarter of 2005.

One of the known things a supervisor is in charge of is making sure his/ her employees are doing their job correctly, and in a safe manner. Throughout the novel Stand Tall by Joan Bauer, the protagonist, Tree, demonstrates he is perseverant through all of the hardships he faces. For instance, when Tree is left home alone with his disabled grandpa during the flood grandpa says, “‘Call your dad’… No answer ‘Call the neighbors we’ll find somebody’… ‘I’m gonna call the police, Grandpa. Tell them we need a ride’ He punched 911. Circuits busy” (141). Clearly this indicates, that Tree is incredibly tenacious during this hardship. The goal of most stories is to convey a point, or to teach a lesson to the reader. Throughout the short stories “Gwilan's Harp” by Ursula K. LeGuin, “The Washwoman” by Isaac Singer, and “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry, the concept of loss plays a common theme throughout the characters' lives. Loss can be attributed to many things, including people, but in these short stories it is nonhuman things in particular that can serve to teach lessons: the harp in “Gwilan's Harp”, the linens in “The Washwoman” and the vine in “The Last Leaf”. Each of these physical objects takes part in a form of loss that serves to help the characters of each story learn a message, whether it be it large or small.…

Loss is one of the hardest challenges to walk through. Why? It signifies the knowledge of having had something. It was held and cherished and loved, before it was whisked away unexpectedly, out of reach. Nothing can bring it back, and only memories of it’s presence remain. The inevitability does not lessen the pain and emptiness it leaves in it’s wake. In three short stories, “Gwilan’s Harp” by Ursula K. LeGuin, “The Washwoman” by Isaac Singer, and “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry, the theme of loss is illustrated through the loss of a family member, prized possession, and a friend.…

In House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski it discusses the experiences everyone endures once entering the house, although the people that enter the house are primarily males as the reader I become part of the book. Resembling to the characters we all symbolize something different, however by the end the characters all become interconnected by causing some harm to themselves or become insane because they cannot determine what is occurring in the house. However, I have learned to not be afraid of the unknown because they are made as a path to learn from. In addition, I changed from being someone that wanted to know everything to having a mystery is fine and not necessary for it to become an obsession.…

Tolkien’s use of Escape in the short story “A Leaf by Niggle” is important in Niggle’s relationship with his painting. Throughout the story Niggle escapes in various ways, all by using his relationship with his painting. First, he escapes into the painting, using it as comfort. He feels an accomplishment has been made as each leaf is completed. Another instance of Niggle using his relationship with his painting as an Escape is avoiding his commitments and problems by absorbing himself into his painting and making it priority. Niggle uses his relationship with his painting to escape the main idea of the story: death. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, life is centered around a rigid Puritan society. In this society, people are not allowed to express their true thoughts and feelings. Every human being needs the opportunity to express how they truly feel; otherwise the emotions become bottled up until they begin to hurt the person. Unfortunately, the puritans were not allowed this type of expression. Luckily, at least for the four main characters, Hawthorne has created a forest to give them shelter. The forest offers a sanctuary from the harshness of Puritan life, symbolizes the character of Pearl and represents evil.…
