Eliezer's Rivalry
Professor Eliezer Shkolnik and his middle-aged son Uriel are both philologists and Talmudic scholars, however, Eliezer, even though he has been labouring for nearly all his life, he still remains in obscurity with his sole recognition being a single footnote of a work by an esteemed scholar.
On the other hand, much to cranky Eliezer’s chagrin, the driven Professor Uriel seems to be showered with recognition, fame and all the things he ever longed for; a distressful topic and the reason for a subtle, yet bitter academic rivalry.

I believe that Eliezer lost faith because he didn’t believe he had anyone to believe in. He believed that if his lord was there for him, he wouldn’t be in the position he is in at the time. He would not be fighting for his life in concentration camps where he was being tortured. Other people were relying on their faith because they strongly believed they would get out of it if they pray often. I’m sure that in the end, if his father had not died he would still rely strongly on his faith. After his father died, he wasn’t relying on anyone but himself. He didn’t have to fight for anyone but himself. I believe that is why he didn’t strongly rely on his faith, because he no longer had faith in anyone but himself.…

The image that Cyrano has molded for himself is drastically different from the one that lives inside. While being a caring and gentle soul, due to his insecurities he creates another persona, that others are familiar with, who is rugged and rough. Throughout Eliezer’s journey through hell, he faces many hardships that are life changing. Night is a memoir about Elie Wiesel’s life in concentration camps during the holocaust. The year is 1941 when Elie, the deeply religious boy with a loving family consisting of three sisters and parents, is taken from home and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Elie is separated from family members (mom and sisters), but remains with his father, only to be transferred from camp to camp. Through their perilous journey, Elie tells about the death…

Every person feels rivalry or competition towards others at some point in their lives. This rivalry greatly affects our ability to understand others, and this eventually results in paranoia and hostility. It is a part of human nature, that people coldly drive ahead for their gain alone. Man's inhumanity towards man is a way for people to protect themselves from having pain inflicted on them by others, and achieving their goals and desires without the interference of others. This concept of man's inhumanity to man is developed in A Separate Peace as the primary conflict in the novel centres on the main character, Gene, and his inner-battles with feelings of jealousy, paranoia, and inability to understand his relationship with his best friend Phineas. Competition is further demonstrated by the occurrence of World War II. It is shown that, "There were few relationships among us (the students) at Devon not based on rivalry." (p. 37) It is this rivalry and competition between the boys at Devon that ripped their friendships apart.…

Everyone needs a guiding light in the distance to show the way, but occasionally that light disappears. For some, that light is faith, family, or friends but once they are gone it comes down to personal choices, even if they have to be made blindly. Similar choices are seen in Elie Wiesel’s Night, JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, and John Knowles A Separate Peace. Elie, Holden, and Gene have to make decisions about their lives and how they are going to live them. The choices offered to them, however, are not always win or lose. The line separating good and bad, right and wrong, and love and hate is changing from black and white to gray. The decision between compassion for others and self-preservation…

In 1787 our founding fathers created the Constitution of the United States. It took lots of compromising, convincing, but in the end they created a new form of government. One compromise was that the Constitution needed a list of rights that were given to American citizens and could never be changed. This list was called the Bill of Rights. The introductory statement to the Constitution was called the preamble. The preamble summarized everything the Constitution would be explaining the purpose of the Constitution and its guidelines.…

One of the most tragic themes in night is Elie’s discovery of the way that atrocities and cruel treatment can make good people into brutes. This is apparent all throughout the book. There were numerous examples were once civil men killed each other over a small crumb of bread. Or were friends would betray each other at the hope that they would survive another day or get more rations. When a person is faced with death, they will do anything in their power to survive. Even if this means betraying there fellow man and becoming a beast. It is pure instinct to want to live and nothing is more power full then the will to survive. Unfortunately I do not believe Elie that evaded the fate of becoming a brute.…
