Thomas Jefferson and the America Slaves
Thomas Jefferson has achieved fame as a founding father of the United States. While
Jefferson contributed much to our American historical culture, he often comes under criticism for his support of any participation in the enslavement of African Americans. Based on Thomas
Jefferson, the strength of the new nation lay on the hands of the small farmers. He also feels that the African American should not have rights to become citizens.
As he explained in his, Notes on the State of Virginia (1785), “Those who labour in the earth are the chosen people of God”. Farmers were an overwhelming majority in the American republic, those who would put their dedication on making the world a better place. Jefferson sees that the small farmers as hard-working, more moral and more trustworthy than any other person.
The farmers have large amount and honest virtue. The farmers know the right choice to make because they are hard-working people and know the value on owning something. Due to the farmers, Jefferson thinks that the farmers will build a better society for the United States.
On the other hand, Jefferson explanation of slaves within the republic argued that African
Americans’ racial appearance of poor quality and different color of the other people from becoming full and equal citizens. The first difference that Jefferson points out is the color of their skins. He describes the Africans of “scarf-skin”. Then he later goes on talking about their texture of hair. He talks about how the Americans hair is flowing and because the Africans do not have that type hair, they are a different type of people and because the United States is forming, he does not think that any person should have the same rights as the Americans.
