Rona Goffen’s “Icon and Vision: Giovanni Bellini’s Half-Length Madonnas” shows how Bellini, and most noticeably his Madonnas, represent the ways that Eastern, Byzantine and Greek, styles effected the western Italian style. Goffen explains the long history of connection with Byzantium which made eastern art not unusual, but a popular style. Bellini used the popular motifs of this style to incorporate into his work; such motifs included Greek letters, a solemn Mary, and his use of half-length which all directly quoted Byzantine and Greek models. These details revealed the Madonnas to be icon paintings and for use in religious worship, not just for aesthetic pleasure, particularly his use of the half-length. This half-length style has a long and ancient history of referencing icons and other figures that were meant to be eternal, just as an icon is the vehicle for an eternal religious presence. This half-length style was not as popular as the full length and enthroned Mary in Venice, a style that Bellini also used and Lymberopoulou points to as an influence on Cretan art. Goffen argues that even though Bellini used some different styles and motifs in comparison to the Byzantine style of making icons, which depended on repetition for its authenticity and spirituality, Bellini still…

Not all artists use characters or gods which symbolize beauty and fertility in their masterpieces, although Botticelli certainly did in his piece La Primavera. Botticelli, an artist during the early piece of the Renaissance, was an artist unlike any seen before. Botticelli was trained under the apprenticeship of Filippo Lippi, who was a famous Medici, or a member of a political dynasty or family with much power during the Renaissance. Individualism, classical naturalism, and scientific naturalism were all important aspects of the Renaissance time period, which helped it to differ from the previous Medieval times. Botticelli’s artwork, especially La Primavera, was very individualistic, which set him apart from the other artists that came before…
When Artemisia was 12 years old, her mom died. She was mainly taught by her father, who was also another praised artist. He taught her many different skills and also introduced her to several different artists around Italy. A lot of whom she plucked inspiration from in her paintings. One of the most known being Caravaggio. “Susanna and the Elders” was one of her earliest paintings. When she got older, her father asked one of his colleagues, Agostino Tassi, to further teach Artemisia. Unfortunately, Tassi raped her. This case was brought into court and he was put on trial. Tassi was later found guilty and was exiled from Rome. The news of her rape ruined her reputation.…
One area where Renaissance artists expressed their interest in human nature was in paintings. First compare the picture of the Madonna with the Renaissance painting of the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci showed a woman as she really looked. He used shading, natural folds in clothing and human expression to paint a person. This is very different from Buoninsegna’s painting. He painted a statue. The face has few features, and is 2 dimensional. The child looks like a little man, and he uses religious symbols to portray emotion. Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Mona Lisa demonstrates the new Renaissance idea of human nature because it illustrated a shift from the use of symbolic representation to convey and idea to the use of human emotions or recognizable scenes. It also shifted focus from religious figures to the individual in a natural setting with greater realistic detail.…

“The Renaissance period was a time of great cultural upheaval which had a profound effect on European intellectual development. Having its beginnings in Italy, by the 16th century, it had spread to the rest of Europe. Its influence was felt in various aspects of intellectual pursuits such as philosophy, literature, religion, science, politics, and, of course, art. The scholars of this period applied the humanist method in every field of study, and sought human emotion and realism in art. The inherent reason for the changes incorporated in artistic technique was a renewed interest in depicting nature in its natural beauty, as well as to resolve the fundamentals of aesthetics, the pinnacles of which can be seen in the works of some of the best of Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci, 1452-1519, regarded as the most versatile of geniuses of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo, 1475-1564, a Florentine sculptor, painter and architect, and Raphael, 1483-1520, whose works embody the ideals of High Renaissance.” (Putatunda, Rita (N.D). First off, I like Mary D. Garrard’s opening statement, “I will suggest a way of looking at Leonardo's art that reveals it as indeed abnormal, but in social rather than psychological terms.”, because like the last week class’s lecture, it was very acceptable and tolerable to be flamboyant, or in better words, have girlish features. I agree with Garrard’s thoughts and her thesis about Leonardo da Vinci’s work. Also, Leonardo da Vinci made the women in his paintings as intelligent creature(s), and equal to their male counterpart. We can see this from da Vinci’s Ginevra de' Benci, where he wrote in Latin, VIRTVTEM FORMA DECORAT, which mean beauty adorns virtue. Also, one can point out the Lady with an Ermine, of Cecilia Gallerani, who da Vinci had considerably respect for. Gallerani even invited da Vinci to a meeting(s) with “the minds” and discussed philosophy and other subjects, which Cecilia was in charge of (WikiVisually). One can see how Da Vinci’s artworks…
Man has been creating art for over 30,000 years. There are cave drawings, sculptures, Egyptian art, Greek Art, Modern Art and plenty more but to many, the Renaissance Art period is considered to be most important. Never had so many geniuses in art lived at one time and never had so many pieces of cherished art been produced. Two examples of Renaissance paintings are Cigoli's Adoration of the Shepherds and Moretto da Brescia's Entombment. Both paintings posses the attributes that were popular during the Renaissance period which I will now contrast and compare.…
The Renaissance started in the 1400s; this time of culture took place in all of Europe. During this time art and literature had flourished. Artists had been at their best during the high renaissance which was during the 1500’s. During this time people had used oil on canvas for the first time. These techniques gave more details and depth to the painting. This was called perspective. The Mona Lisa was a world renowned painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. It was a painting of his wife even though she was not very special historically. This painting was so popular that it had set the standard for all other paintings of that time. Another painting that Leonardo painted was “The Last Supper “was Jesus with his disciples eating. This painting had amazing…
Michelangelo and Caravaggio were possibly the two most renowned painters during the Renaissance period. Both Renaissance artists painted religious scenes, approaching their artworks in diverse ways according to their personal framework and attitudes. Where Michelangelo’s tortured soul was portrayed directly onto his paintings, Caravaggio’s almost arrogant attitude and need for action and drama resulted in his dark, melodramatic pieces.…
A well known photograph by Floria Sigismondi, titled “self portrait with cat” symbolises her Italian heritage and features many aspects of Leonardo da Vinci’s oil painting “Lady with Ermine”. The photograph has many features such as a “style of pose” which symbolises a similar pose to Leonardo’s painting, while including an animal used for symbolic reasons also a technique used in Leonardo’s painting. The photograph is set in a post modern context and features “coloured and textured garments” a simple technique that was also used in the “Lady with Ermine” artwork.…
Michelangelo Caravaggio, greatest Italian Baroque artist, was born in 1573. He had a complex character and a trouble personality, which he often got drunk and got involve into a fight. In 1605, he committed a murder and was sentence to death but he had been working in major Churches of Rome. Therefore, he had an important friend, Cardinal Del Monte, who became his sponsor and helped him to escape from Rome to Naples, where he was still painting a lot of incredible works. In 1610, Caravaggio was granted pardon by the pope, so he decided to go back to Rome. Unfortunately, he had a fever and died at the beach. Caravaggio introduced new style of painting called Naturalism, painting people and things truly as they are while Renaissance period tried to paint everyone and everything looks beautiful, beautiful clothes, good looking, flower in bloom and fruit seem ready to eat, However Caravaggio painted ugly people, poor people in old ragged clothes, flower that was dying or fruit that was going rotten. He tried to keep his painted away from ideal of beauty. This is a new idea, which was new development of Western art, to think as they are. Caravaggio had many works focus on portrait of low life, that was not only mean poor people, but also people getting drunk, prostitute, gambler, people getting fight and illegal activities. He had a lot of famous work firstly was David and Goliath, David holding the head of Goliath, which Goliath’s head was his self-portrait because Caravaggio has been sentence to death; his head should be cut off, but he escape before, Therefore he painted David show pity for giant and that for made people feel pity for him. Secondly, St. Mathew’s Martyrdom, another famous picture, was a new way of painting. Murderer was in a center and the light was focus on murderer not a Saint. Thirdly, Cardsharps, gambling picture, was a picture of rich boy cheated by poor boy, who had extra cards tucked in his belt behind his back, and old man, who was…
Last winter I visited the Rembrandt exhibit in Raleigh at the North Carolina Art Museum. It featured the largest collection of Rembrandt paintings ever presented in an American exhibition. One of the most famous paintings was “The Suicide of Lucretia”. That is the painting I just described to you. That girl’s death led to a revolt that overthrew the monarchy and established the Republic of Rome. Rembrandt took great strides to express Lucretia’s mental feelings. It showed her family honor, virtue, and duty all through her eyes and facial expression. This painting not only expresses the emotion of the moment but also the story that this girls life, made on the world. This is why Rembrandt is considered one of the finest Dutch Realist artists. This historical painting is of enormous power and emotion.…
