Elodie Alternate Ending
A slight breeze swayed the thin hemlock trees and children's laughter absorbed the foggy air. Elodie stared out of her window as if it were a memory, she remembered her own careless laughter and rosy cheeks that lit up the frigid white winter. It soon became ironic, the contrast of a raw and innocent childhood to a somber and painful adulthood. Elodie heard a moan and rushed down the creaking stairs of the apartment to find Evan trying to get off of the floor, trying to move the muscles taken away from him long ago. Passion and love are wicked: happiness crumbles to pain, and love converts to constraining affection. Starting from 15, Elodie's and Evan's fondness and devotion grew strong with age, unwinding all their secrets and dreams upon …show more content…
"Angeline, papa, and Aran are coming today. I am going to cook turkey. Can you pass the salt beside you?", Elodie's voice suddenly tingled with joy. Waiting patiently, she turned to look at Evan, he was no longer by the window. Elodie, anxious, turned around hastily, and saw Evan looking up at the pictures on the wall: Elodie in a park, Elodie holding hands with her brother, Elodie decorating the apartment. Elodie played with her hands, with a foreign and lost sentiment; she turned around to nervously continue cooking. Once the turkey was ready and in the oven, Elodie called over Evan to see the result. "It's beautiful and yet so frightening how you can create something so stunning to have it disappear in such a short amount of time," Evan whispered, vanishing. Franticly, Elodie searched for Evan. The laughter of children outside grew louder and louder, penetrating the walls she built to protect herself. Hysteria overcame Elodie as she sat against the wall, breathing rapidly. Looking at the rays of sunlight through the window, heaven seemed so near. Suddenly, the image Evan reflected off of all objects in the room, his beautiful voice of blooming spring was everywhere, yet it couldn't fill the silence Elodie tried to neglect. Elodie doubted the presence of her existence as everything around her seemed to not see her, to not comfort her, Evan was nowhere near. She reached for the phone and dialed Angelica's

Meanwhile, Mrs. Chipley’s daughter wasn’t faring too well either. 1. The overarching tone of this piece is shamefully miserable. Sherman Alexie conveys this by using negative diction, for example; Alexie begins his first grade excerpt by saying, “My hair was short and the U.S. Government glasses were horn-rimmed, ugly…” The author uses the word ‘ugly’ to indicate young Alexie lacks in self confidence and is ashamed of his appearance. Alexie continues on saying, “… in school the other Indian boys chased me from one corner of the playground to the other. They pushed me down, buried me in the snow until I couldn’t breathe, thought I’d never breathe again.” He was miserable since the day he started school, that’s sad. The phrase “couldn’t breathe, thought I’d never breathe” makes me feel hopeless and vulnerable all at once. As the school years goes by, nothing seems to change except Alexie no longer gets physically hurt. He still feels ashamed and dejected from his own tribe. He will always be a misfit.…

Addie, the mother of the family, and the driving force behind the deterioration of her family’s world, has a bitter perspective of love and existence. Her internal thoughts, which appear only once in a chapter later in the book, reveal her complicated emotional view towards her painful situation. Her language is dark and cold, and she often reiterates the idea that “words are no good” (page 171). Addie’s voice is of a woman who has only known the empty love of her father, and of Anse, and the hardships of motherhood. Words have never been true to her, and therefore she cannot understand their importance. Her morbid and angry voice is most present when she expresses a want to injure her students, and murder her husband. Her hatred for humanity is clear when she compares them…

Despite plenty of pleasant descriptions—White’s father comically rolling over in a canoe, the reverence for the silent lake in the early morning, the young waitresses, the walk to the farmhouse for dinner, the pleasures of boating and fishing, the taste of soda, the laughter of other campers clowning around in the rain—little hints of melancholy and uncertainty emerge as the essay develops, and lead toward the chill of death at the end.…

Adolescence is a time when children begin to experience heightened emotions and are unable to suppress them. These waves of new feelings tackle the confused and curious minds of the young, building up tension in their bodies and minds. Eventually, this tension comes out in various acts of rage, rebellion, and depression, but something must be an influence to these acts. Elsa Bernstein’s Twilight and Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening showcase these various emotions and address the influencers of these actions as the adults in the plays. Parents during the late 1800s seemed to have superior roles in influencing the children of that time. Whether children were influenced to behave or rebel, the actions of the elders in these plays caused for great emotional changes in each child character. Along with loneliness and depression, extreme feelings of love and lust, as well as pressure to succeed, are deeply felt by the young. Each adult figure influences a child character in some way. This influence is responsible for the child’s reaction to a specific situation. When the adults in both plays do not recognize the child’s current state of emotion, the children’s fate ends much more extreme, than if the adults had acknowledged the struggling feelings of the young.…

In this recollection, Annie uses a first-person narrative to reveal the perspective of a seven-year-old child and include her thoughts on children. The tone is informal due to her straightforward words and thoughts, resulting in addressing the audience directly and creating a child persona. This was accomplished by writing brief and succinct sentences in the whole story and repetitions of the word “you” in the introduction, “You thought up a new strategy for every play and whispered it to the others. You went out for a pass, fooling everyone…” (¶1). Throughout the story, her tone remains enthusiastic and nostalgic as she recounts the events of the chase, “In winter, in the snow, there was neither baseball nor football, so the boys and I threw snowballs at passing cars. I got in trouble throwing snowballs, and have seldom been happier since” (¶2). This is due to her intended audience, the adults, as she reminisces about her childhood adventures. Her intention is to remind adults of the passion and determination they had when they were little and lost as they grew up.…
