Elvis Presley’s was known as the king of rock and roll. He was the reason why we have rock and roll. In 1950’s, the south was heavily racially segregated. Elvis allowed African American music to be accessible to white American. Elvis became even more popular. He shook his hips and dance on stage, which turned parents against his music. Elvis opened the door for whites to listen to black American music. They wouldn’t let black people music through, but Elvis made it happened. Elvis music allows teens to express their freedom/there selves physically and sexually. Elvis Presley changed music, his music positively influenced American society. Elvis appearance and singing end up changing the teenage world. Teens knew their parents hated Elvis. Elvis music provided a way for teens to go crazy and to express themselves. He was a very unstoppable force. It came to a point when teens started copying his dressing, his hair and so on. Girls wanted to be with him and guys wanted to dress like him. Men were slicking their hair back and growing side burns just like Elvis. Teen’s parents thought he was just poisoning the teenagers. Back in the 1950’s, people didn’t really know what Elvis music was. Didn’t know if it was rhythm or country. Elvis could sing it all, all like it was just one thing. Elvis began to appear on TV. TV was an institution of control, people would rather give up their refrigerator instead of the TV. Television was a huge deal in a household. TV broadcast bought sexuality in the open. American society was terrified.
