The emergency preparedness and disaster planning involve a coordinated effort between various organizations who coordinate a plan of action. They delegate resources to target areas that need immediate attention. This is a strategic process that communicates with the state, local, federal, media and police departments to help assist in a major disaster. OSHA has a written plan that outlines the resources and preparedness that is needed during a disaster. All parties involved must comply with the order be set forth. In order for a disaster plan to be implemented - certain phases are adopted such as response phase, mitigation phase, and rescue and recovery phases. Consequently, an emergency plan needs to be in place for all healthcare facilities.

In preparation for a disaster via natural periodically a mock disaster should be implemented ensuring that everyone involved will know what position to take. This will allow the staff to adapt to a variety of circumstances by providing a guideline to the processes, protocols, procedures, and division of responsibilities in case of an emergency response. Emergency Preparedness planning is vital to a to a state or environment who has experience a natural disaster. FEMA is the gatekeeper in the response of communicating a plan of action. This allow the staff to survey the damage and provide instruction on how to get the necessary help to the people involved. It is a daunting task for the rescue workers to do search and rescue to find individuals that need immediate help. Due to unforeseen circumstances procedures must be followed to ensure the safety of all involved. All parties involved go through rigorous training and impromptu scenarios to ensure they know how to respond in case there services are needed.
Rationale Emergency Plan Preparedness is needed, not only for responding but to ensure that they are doing everything necessary to mitigate the impacts of the disaster.
In a healthcare setting the physcians,nurses, police, emt and fire department must be ready to deal with type of disaster that might arise. The media is important in establishing communication with the public informing them of a potential disaster that is approaching. The business community will be affected tremendously by the lack of power or limited access to their establishment. In the meanwhile, it is very difficult for the business community to manage the crisis, and to help provide recovery efforts with limited resources. Dealing with a disaster can become a social and economic issue that can have an adverse effect on the public. Public support is needed to help with the planning stages of a disaster.
