* Emile Durkheim was the first French academic sociologist who was passionately involved in the affairs of the French society. He was born in Epinal in the eastern French province of Lorraine on April 15, 1858. He came from a family of Jews. His father served as a rabbi, which later influenced him to take the same path to becoming a rabbi himself. He studied and later at the age of thirteen he had his confirmation. Shortly after he became influenced by a catholic teacher and had a mystical experience and gained an interest in Catholicism. Nevertheless he turned away from the religious involvement and became an agnostic. Durkheim was a bright student and studied in a variety of colleges, including one where he attempted the most to get in, Ecole Normale Superieure, and after two failed attempts he finally gained admission to the school. There he became friends and fellow alumni with other later important figures in France such as, Henri Bergson who would become philosopher of vitalism and another such as Jean Jaures who would become the future socialist leader. Durkheim finished his years in school successfully and went on to teaching philosophy. He then married Louise Dreyfus and had two children.
