Emmet Ray In Sweet And Lowdown
According to the comedy-drama film “Sweet and Lowdown” written by Woody Allen, we know that the main character Emmet Ray is just a fictional character instead of a real person. At first, the character seemed to be a real person because the famous music jazz critic Nat Hentoff and writer-director Douglas McGrath made some description about the made-up story of Emmet Ray throughout the film, and they faced the camera in classic talking-head mode. The story plot was set in the 1930’s and Emmet Ray considered himself as the world’s second greatest jazz guitarist. Emmet Ray had always admired Django Reinhardt music, and he even fainted twice because of Django’s presence. Django Reinhardt was the Gypsy jazz guitarist who dominated the Hot Club of …show more content…
At first, Emmet did not like this girl and felt frustrated because he found it difficult to communicate with Hattie. As time goes by, they formed an intimate relationship and Emmet even brought her with him to Hollywood. We learned that Emmet hated Hollywood because Hattie was the one got discovered, not him. Hattie was chosen by a movie director to play a character in his movie, even though she could not speak. Emmet noticed that Hattie enjoyed his music, and she even bought him a present for his birthday. Even though at the bottom of Emmet’s heart, he knew that Hattie was different from other women and he liked her, he still left her in the middle of the night because of fearing to be tied up in a …show more content…
Nobody knew the real reason why Emmet married her spontaneously, as they had nothing alike except the obsession with clothing. Blanche Williams was a writer herself, and she always observe Emmet’s emotion when he was playing his guitar. According to Blanche, Emmet had a violent side and he turned it into his music. She described Emmet as the “ego of genius”; however, she could only “feel pain in his music”. Emmet could also listen to Django Reinhardt’s recordings for hours and cries. Shortly after their marriage, Blanche started an affair with a guy named Al Torrio because she felt bored, that guy was the bodyguard of Mr. Bedloe. After Emmet Ray found out, he left Blanche and tried ask Hattie to forgive him and take him back. Unfortunately, Hattie told him that she was married happily, and she also had kids. Emmet left disappointedly, and ended up smashing his guitar because he was angry at himself for letting go of Hattie. Towards the end of the movie, we learned that Emmet just disappeared from public view, and people did not know what happened to him.
After watching this movie, I think Emmet Ray learned a lesson from his relationship with Hattie. He realized that he made the wrong decision for leaving Hattie, and also how selfish he had been to the women he hung out or dated. I guess this was the reason why he just suddenly disappeared from the music industry. Yes, I think this movie

Additionally, I learned so much about how mixing different styles of music can make a beautiful and unique sound. I also think that the movie was very inspirational because Ray had to overcome so many obstacles to become the big star that he was. It enhanced my musical knowledge because I learned that R&B music can be mixed with gospel, pop, country, jazz and blues…

Later in the scene, we find out that Blanche had lost hers and Stella’s plantation. There were an abundance of other deaths in the family that Blanche had to deal with and pay for. “Death is expensive!” (22), Blanche says to Stella explaining herself. “That long parade to the Graveyard! Father, Mother! Margaret, That dreadful way! So big with it,…(scene 1, pg 21)” Blanche obviously couldn’t afford all these funerals on a teaching salary. During the 1920's, a new style of jazz became highly popular. Big bands began to dominate the jazz scene. The big band era was split into two different styles: “hot” jazz and “sweet” jazz. Jelly Roll Morton and Paul Whiteman were two bandleaders and composers who were highly recognized and well-known during this musical time period. Jelly Roll Morton was highly influential in the “hot” jazz genre, while Paul Whiteman became celebrated for his “sweet” jazz music. Two songs that mark each musician's distinct style are “Black Bottom Stomp” by Jelly Roll Morton and “If I Can't Get the Sweetie” by Paul Whiteman. The actors’ attitudes in each sequence in the montage and their placement in relation to one another are each examples of the mise-en-scene portraying Charles and Emily’s feelings toward each other as time passes in their marriage. The introduction to the montage shows the viewer two individuals playfully flirting after a long night of parties. Charles even plays the role of a butler as he serves his wife. Emily on the other hand, giggles and smiles as she begs her husband to stay home with her a little longer before he goes to work. As each successive sequence passes, Emily becomes reprimanding as her husband begins to spend more time at work, scornful when he insists on putting Mr. Bernstein’s gift in the nursery and when he insults the president in his newspaper, and eventually sad as she sits at a silent breakfast table reading the rival newspaper of her husband’s. Charles tone of voice evolves from flirtatious in the opening sequence, to powerful and controlling as his paper starts to become more successful, to critical when his wife starts to question his authority and literary topics, to demanding as he tells…
