Throughout the film Ray had frequent flashbacks to when he was a young boy in the 1930s. The flashbacks focused on Ray’s childhood as a poor southern boy being raised by his mother who was a poor sharecropper and his little brother, George who drowned when Ray was just five years old. Ray had a very strong and resilient mother who refused to let Ray use his blindness as a reason for him to not be successful in life. Ray’s mother eventually sent him to a school for the deaf and blind in Florida.

Overall, I think Ray was an excellent movie. I learned so much about Ray Charles as an entertainer and some of the issues that he went through in the music industry. Additionally, I learned so much about how mixing different styles of music can make a beautiful and unique sound. I also think that the movie was very inspirational because Ray had to overcome so many obstacles to become the big star that he was. It enhanced my musical knowledge because I learned that R&B music can be mixed with gospel, pop, country, jazz and blues
