This movie is mainly about the growing friendship between Greg and Rachel. Greg has managed to map out the school’s social hierarchy, and become acquaintances with every group. He makes sure not to become too close to anyone, except Earl, who is more like his coworker. They have known each other since kindergarten, and make movies together. hang out with Rachel to make her feel better. This forced relationship becomes a remarkable friendship as they continue to interact with one another. The two friends each have their own vision of a future, and influence their opinions on each other. Rachel convinces Greg to apply for college, and Greg begs Rachel to continue chemotherapy. This relationship changes Rachel and Greg’s outlook on life forever.
There were many excellent aspects of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
I liked how Greg was talking to the audience. Normally, movies are like watching someone else’s life. In this movie, Greg was talking the audience through his life, as if they were there. I also enjoyed how the movie was shown as a documentary, but not about history. The movie was separated into “parts,” based on the way Greg viewed his life experiences. This is an excellent aspect of the film because it was entertaining to see how Greg viewed things in his eyes, rather than watch a movie about somebody’s life.
Even though this film had many pleasant features, it had some flaws as well. The beginning of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was very slow. The plot took a long time to develop, which made the beginning very boring. Also, I didn’t like how there were “scenes” of a moose showing Greg’s emotions at random points throughout the movie. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl has a very good base and theme, but needs further development.
I would recommend Me and Earl and the Dying Girl to anyone who likes a cliche movie where two people fall in love, and then one dies of cancer. Anyone who likes a sad, realistic fiction movie should definitely watch this movie. The plot is interesting, but predictable. Overall, I didn’t think this movie was outstanding, so I rate it three
stars.
