Karen, let me also leave you a question: How would you be able to apply these coping strategies in your clinical practice (being a hospital clinician)? Do you think this is feasible?…
The same stressor could not affect one person, but could cause a different person stress. This is because the same stressor could happen in a different context, causing people to be differentially vulnerable to stressors (Lecture). Stress that is experienced does not always lead to distress. Coping strategies are a tool that can help to reduce the amount stress that ends up affecting someone’s health. Problem-focused coping strategy works on eliminating the stressor.…
Coping methods vary widely, as there are hundreds, but they can be narrowed into nine forms, all which focus on different things. The types are humor, seeking support, problem-solving, relaxation, physical recreation, adjusting expectations, denial, self-blame, and venting. The type of coping method a person “uses” simply depends on the person, situation, and they way they were raised. Not all ways to cope are good, however. Bottling it up, a form of denial, causes the person to have trouble speaking their mind to other people, no matter how close they may be to the person. Certain ways work better for different people, such as an outspoken person might find someone or somewhere that will let them release their thoughts about the cause of their feelings, known as venting. People need to cope for different reasons, most circling back to stress.”…

King was influenced by the works of Transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. He studied his work while at Morehouse, and was impressed with his concept of civil disobedience (McElrath & Andrews, 2007). King was intrigued by the possibilities of Thoreau’s method. Thoreau stated that it was better to “break the law than to participate in the injustice toward another person” (McElrath & Andrews, 2007).…
Oneis problem-focused, which includes time management and addressing the matter that is inducing stress head on. Another type is emotion focused 7 coping that includes praying about a stressful situation and talking about it openly. Venting 8 is an element that is emotion-focused and involves a verbal unloading of one’s negative thoughts to another individual ("Coping Styles, Coping Mechanisms: Ways To Deal With Stress", 2016). This person is usually a confidante that the stressed individual trusts and can seek advice…

I want to handle stress in a positive manner and not negatively. It is bad to have negative thoughts while handling stress, for it can cause bad thoughts, such as self harm and suicide. From personal experience, there was a time in which I handled the stress I had in a poor manner. Senior year, I was burdened from the stress of having to deal with my brother who was ill in the hospital, my father with an income that could not help support the family, and a mother who was not understanding of the situation we were going through and blame the entire family’s problems on me. I felt as if my world was crumbling apart and truly believed that I was the cause to the family’s problems. This stress burdened me so much I simply broke. I skipped school and cried my eyes out and let my grades in school drop. I dealt with this stress similarly to Charlie, in which I tried to avoid the problem and not tell anyone. With this, I only realized that it was not going to help the situation and it could not improve. It was not until I went to seek professional help from the school therapist to help me deal with my stress. I personally wish I could have been like Tillman, who dealt with his stress positively and head on. If I had done so, I could have improved the relationship and problems within my family…

Recovery following an acquired brain injury is a stressful life event. In general, stress can be created in many different ways, whether as a reaction to a specific issue, the result of chronic problems, or an injury. The affected individual must overcome deficits, adapt and re-learn many skills that were not compromised prior to the brain injury along with the changing dynamics of previous relationships. The process of adjustment to acquired brain injury is often divided into a biomedical process and a psychosocial adaptation process, with psychosocial or emotional pathway being how a person perceives their circumstance and overcomes it (Brands, Wade, Stapert, Van Heugten,…
A psychological crisis refers to an individual's inability to solve a problem. We all exist in a state of emotional equilibrium, a state of balance, or homeostasis (Aguilera,1998). This theory states that a crisis is unique to every individual, although our crisis may seem similar of that of another individual, the way we interpret and deal with our crisis is very much different. Aguilera states that we all at some point in our lives will find an inability that denies us from solving a problem. Aguilera describes crisis as the state of our psychological equilibrium being continuously threatened by stressors. The better that people come through each crisis, the better they will tend to deal with what lies ahead, but this is not to say that all is lost and never to be recovered if a person has had a…

As I deeply contemplated what I would like about Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the concept of corrective emotional experience came to my mind. In the process of EFT treatment, therapist helps the couple to get in touch with their emotions, understand what it is that they need from their partners, and regulate their emotions to send clear and coherent emotional signals to their partner. Specifically, the couple learns not only to understand their own superficial and deep-seated emotions, needs, and interactional cycle in Stage 1 (de-escalation), but also to restructure their negative interaction and create a positive dance so they can move closer. And, I thought that, for many couples in the therapy room, this might be their first emotional experience that is secure and loving. This fulfillment of the fundamental need for emotional connection can then impact each partner’s life satisfactory, work performance, self-esteem, and other areas of functioning more positively. I believe that the EFT is providing the new, corrective emotional experience that each partner in the couple has failed to experience in the past.…
