Bockarova, (2016) further extended this concept to state that technology uses may be reducing empathy, as technology is shown to have a negative impact on attention, and attention is needed to produce sincere empathetic responses. Bockarova, (2016) noted technology uses could be heightening the effects of mind-wandering and shortening attention span, as it can provide instant gratification. Thus, she examined the association between technology uses, mind-wandering, and empathy. She hypothesized that hourly use of technology would be associated with lower empathy. For the qualitative part of the study, they interviewed five undergraduate students about their how the technology usage was affecting their relationship, and were asked to give specific examples, through five open ended questions. She discussed that inability to focus attention in a conversation may be caused by the mind-wandering, reducing ability to connect, caused by excessive use of technology. In the quantitative part of the study, participants first completed, a demographic questionnaire which included a measurement of technology usage, a mind-wandering questionnaire, and a 16 item self-report measure of state empathy. They hypothesized that individuals who use technology and media more often, individuals who have negative perceptions of technology, individuals who prefer multitasking, and those who are more anxious in checking their technological devices, would most likely show clinical symptoms of psychiatric disorders. Participated were directed to complete an anonymous online survey.
