The Incas were a powerhouse in the South American region, never losing a battle until the advanced Spaniards came (Gabriel). Due to this, Atahualpa felt unconcerned and overconfident due to his personal beliefs and his overconfidence in the Incan army that dominated South America. Atahualpa believed that the technology of guns that the Spaniards produced would not work at night, which led to the decision to hold the meeting without weapons (Somervill). This decision was made on a blank assumption, as the Incas would utilize other weapons such as bows and arrows during their fighting. Atahualpa only brought 4,000 armed men with him because he was overconfident and underestimated the Spaniards (Commire). However, this proved to be a fatal mistake. As the Spanish marched towards Cajamarca, Pizzaro felt confident as well. The Spaniards had much better weapons and were technologically superior than the Incas which gave them an edge in the battle due to the higher quality weapons they had. The Incas did not have metal, which gave the Spaniards the edge (Watts). The Spanish had higher-quality weapons and materials, which made them stronger. Atahualpa was not familiar with these materials, as South America was very isolated from European developments. As the Spanish finally reached Cajamarca and the sun fell behind the ominous clouds, it was time for the meeting controlling the …show more content…
This was a massive misunderstanding, as the contents and significance of the Bible did not apply to Atahualpa due to the Incan disconnection from the European world. The Spanish conquistador tried to christianize the Incas, however Atahualpa was against it and did not accept the religion due to his misunderstanding of it, becoming a catalyst for the Spanish to attack them (Watts). The Spaniards captured the Incan emperor after he threw the Bible to the ground, rejecting Christianity. For that, Pizzaro captured him and held him for ransom (Watts). The Incans were wrong, as hundreds of Incans were killed by the much-advanced Spaniards and their working guns. Atahualpa was captured, and ready to be executed. To link back to the thesis, Atahualpa confronted Pizzaro's men without weapons because he misunderstood Pizzaro's strength and the Spanish army, while the Spanish army got mad at him for rejecting Christianity. But looking at this deeply, there is a reason Atahualpa believes he will win. Power can create or destroy empires. For the large empires, power was a tool utilized to colonize and scare the weak citizens. For the weak, power is a tool that they will never grasp.
