Empirical Formula of Copper (II) Chloride
Objectives
1. To validate that the empirical formula of copper (II) chloride is .
2. To calculate the percent composition of copper in copper (II) chloride.
3. To illustrate the Law of Constant Composition in copper (II) chloride.
4. To study the reaction between copper (II) chloride solution and aluminium metal.
Introduction
One of the most fundamental statements of the atomic theory is that elements combine in simple whole number ratios. This observation gives support to the theory of atoms, since no one would expect atoms to combine. It is observed that the combining ratio for a given compound is constant …show more content…
My experimental percent composition of copper in copper (II) chloride was found to be 38.61%, which is also incorrect. Using the information from the periodic table, I was able to find the correct percent composition of copper, which is 47.2%. I also calculated the percent composition of chlorine, which is 52.8%. When both percent compositions are added up, it gives a result of 100%, which demonstrates The Law of Constant Composition. This law states that the composition of a substance is always the same, regardless of how the substance was made or where the substance is found.
